We all have our favorite treats that trigger a happy, loving memory.  My favorite childhood treats were Mountain Dew, Reeses Peanut Butter Cups, and my grandma’s Rice Krispie Treats.  Mmm, those ooey, gooey, buttery, marshmallow bars were so yummy and made with so much love.  Can you see the trend?  I have some very happy memories related to sugar.

Sugar is highly addictive and as bad as any drug.  It can make you feel really energetic, happy, and that feeling of falling in love.  As it starts to wear off you begin to feel that low.  You may be tired, cranky, and even get a headache.  Your brain craves more.

Diabetes and obesity have become National epidemics.  Sixty years ago the average American consumed approximately five pounds of sugar per year.  Today, the average American consumes around 150 pounds of sugar per year.  We can thank the processed food industry.  Super stealthy marketing strategies have made it easy to disguise sugars by using different names such as high fructose corn syrup, crystallized fructose, sorbitol, and many more names in addition to the actual word sugar.  They also like to use cute little cartoon characters or strong words like fortified or whole-grain to deter our attention from what we are actually eating.

So we have to ask is this really a treat?  Reroute your thought patterns by focusing on the sweetness of life.  Enjoy a stroll on the beach, hold a baby, hug a friend, or share a black bean brownie with your family at Fresh Thymes Café made with a touch of pure maple syrup, a natural sweetener.

A few steps to help break free from sugar addiction:  1. Read Labels 2.  Don’t buy food advertised on t.v. 3.  Keep it out of the house 4.  Adequate sleep heals the body 5.  Think positive loving thoughts, look for alternatives, and don’t beat your self up.  Life is sweet!
