Lumecca Peak Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is an advanced phototherapy treatment designed to improve skin tone, reduce pigmentation, and address various skin imperfections. It uses a broad-spectrum light that penetrates the skin to target pigmented cells, making it effective for treating multiple skin concerns. Here’s a breakdown of its uses, effectiveness, suitability, and post-care recommendations.

Treatment areas for IPL

  • Face: Addresses pigmentation, fine lines, sunspots, and redness, resulting in an even skin tone.
  • Neck and décolletage: Often prone to sun damage, these areas benefit from the reduction in discoloration and textural improvements.
  • Hands: Sunspots and age spots on the hands respond well to IPL.
  • Legs and arms: Can reduce freckles, age spots, and scarring.
  • Chest and back: Treats pigmentation and mild acne scarring.

Ideal candidates for IPL

  • Skin concerns: Individuals with sun damage, age spots, rosacea, vascular lesions, and uneven skin tone.
  • Skin type: IPL is most effective on fair to medium skin tones (Fitzpatrick types I-III). Darker skin tones may require a tailored approach due to a higher risk of hyperpigmentation.
  • Health considerations: Good candidates are generally in good health and free from skin infections, sunburn, or open lesions in the treatment area.
  • Realistic expectations: Those looking for a non-invasive approach to skin rejuvenation and willing to commit to multiple treatments for optimal results.

*Not ideal for: Individuals with melasma, recent sun burn, or those who use tanning beds regularly.

Pre-procedure care for IPL

Limit direct UV exposure to the treatment area one month prior to procedure (use sunblock or wear a hat).

During treatment there will be a bright flash of light from the device that feels like a light elastic sensation. Redness and a slight warming of the skin are normal after treatment and usually subsides within an hour. Over the next 24-48 hours you may see a darkening of pigmented spots; in the week afterwards, the pigmented lesions flake off, leading to an evening out of skin tone. After treating vascular lesions, you may see the vein blanch and disappear or a color change in the vessel which dissipates after a few days.

Post-procedure care for IPL

  • Avoid sun exposure: It’s essential to protect treated skin from sun exposure to prevent pigmentation changes and optimize results. Broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher is recommended.
  • Gentle skincare: Use gentle cleansers and avoid active ingredients (like retinol, acids, or exfoliants) for at least a few days post-treatment.
  • Moisturize: Hydrate the skin to promote healing, especially if any dryness or flaking occurs.
  • Cool compresses: If redness or mild swelling occurs, cool compresses can provide relief.
  • Avoid heat and physical activity: To minimize the risk of irritation, avoid hot showers, saunas, and intense exercise for the first 24-48 hours.

Timeline for seeing results

  • Many patients notice visible improvement in skin clarity and tone within a few days to a week post-treatment.
  • Optimal results are typically seen after one to three sessions, depending on the skin concern and individual response. The skin continues to improve over several weeks as pigmented lesions fade.
  • Some patients choose follow-up treatments every few months to maintain results, especially for ongoing skin issues.
