Summer Heat Taking The Wheel

The summer activities we all love and cherish are upon us! The longer days energize our ambitions and fuel our freedom. This much anticipated seasonal excitement often leads to travel. With this increased travel, comes increased potential for transportation accidents.

Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, an influx of family vacationers, beach-goers, campers and other motorists hit the road for summer adventures. The warmer weather also entices increased pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists to share the road.  To keep our fellow Delawareans safe this summer, it is crucial for our motorists to pay attention to these other modes of transportation. Driving inattentively for seconds can forever alter the course of our lives and others. We must be aware of our fellow commuters, on foot or on wheels, to ensure everyone gets to their intended destination safely.

Pedestrians

As the weather warms up, more people will be out walking, jogging, and running on sidewalks and roadways. Pedestrians are particularly vulnerable because they have no protection. Delaware law gives pedestrians the right-of-way in crosswalks and on sidewalks. When driving in areas with a lot of foot traffic, drivers should slow down and be prepared to stop quickly.

Given the severe nature of pedestrian accidents, it is often a good idea to contact an attorney if you have been hit by a vehicle. Even when pedestrian accidents are not fatal, they can require extensive surgery or medical attention.

Bicyclists

Many people choose to bike to work, school, or for recreation during the warmer months. Unfortunately, drivers often forget to watch out for bicyclists on the road. In Delaware, bicyclists have the right to use all roads, with a few specific exceptions. It is important to be aware of bicyclists and to give them plenty of space when safely passing them on roadways.

In addition to potentially being injured by a driver, bicyclists can be injured due to dangerous road conditions – such as uneven sidewalks or defective products. Victims of a bicycle accidents can suffer abrasions, broken bones, internal injuries, or worse. Our attorneys have the skill and insight necessary to obtain suitable compensation for our clients who have suffered a serious injury in bicycle accidents.

Motorcyclists

Summer is also a popular time for motorcycle enthusiasts. With more motorcycles on the road, drivers need to be extra vigilant. Motorcycles can be difficult to see. Motor vehicle drivers should always double-check all mirrors and their blind spots before making any maneuvers. Motorists should also keep a greater distance behind a motorcycle, as motorcycles can stop more abruptly. Motor vehicle drivers should also be aware of the unique challenges that motorcycles face, such as slippery road conditions, and be prepared to share the road safely.

With so little protection from the elements, as well as other vehicles, a motorcycle crash can easily result in catastrophic injuries. Under these circumstances, you want the strongest people on your side. The Kimmel Carter team has in-depth experience with the unique nature of motorcycle accident cases and an impressive record of victories for motorcycle riders.
