Simplifying Sustainability
Single-Stream Recycling in Delaware
The Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) spearheads single-stream recycling initiatives across the state. Through Delaware’s Universal Recycling Law, all residents who have trash services at their homes are provided with curbside recycling bins. In addition, DSWA provides drop-off locations at most of their facilities, making recycling accessible to everyone.
What is Single-Stream Recycling?
Single-stream recycling allows residents to place all of their recyclable materials—paper, plastics, glass, and metal—into one container without the need for sorting. This simplifies the recycling process and encourages higher participation rates among communities. DSWA provides a list of items that can and can not be recycled on their website, dswa.com
Three Simple Rules for Recycling Right!
Single-stream recycling operates on three simple yet crucial rules: loose, clean, and dry. Keeping recyclables loose means not bagging them. This allows for efficient sorting at the sorting facility, preventing materials from getting stuck or missed. Making sure items are clean helps maintain the quality of the recycling stream and prevents contamination. Clean materials are more likely to be accepted and successfully recycled. Keeping recyclables dry is essential to preserving their value. Moisture can degrade paper and cardboard and could make them unrecyclable. By following these three rules, individuals can significantly enhance the effectiveness of single-stream recycling programs.
The Art of Separation: How Single-Stream Recycling Is Sorted
Single-stream recycling in Delaware undergoes a sorting process at the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in New Castle. Initially, the materials are unloaded onto a conveyor belt where they undergo a preliminary hand sorting process. This involves manually removing contaminants and large items that may hinder the sorting machinery. Next, recyclables pass through a series of screens, conveyor belts, and optical sorting systems. These high-tech systems use sensors and air jets to separate different materials such as plastics, paper, glass, and metals based on their unique properties. Once sorted, the materials are compacted and baled for easier transportation to recycling facilities where they will be processed into new products. Through this comprehensive sorting process, Delaware maximizes the efficiency of its single-stream recycling system, contributing to environmental sustainability and resource conservation. DSWA has created a Virtual Tour of Delaware’s MRF that will give you a first-hand look at the process.
Single-stream recycling in Delaware is more than just a method of waste management—it’s a commitment to preserving the environment and creating a cleaner, greener future for all. Through shared efforts and a dedication to sustainability, Delawareans can make a significant impact in protecting our planet.
