Power Grab: Blue Hen Utility Services, Inc. “Taps” The DE Market!

Michele Reynolds - Blue Hen Utility Services By Michele L. Reynolds, President

When storms or other issues breached power lines in the First State, all of the repair work was contracted to out-of-state firms. A Delaware-based utility service company would have a faster response time to address power outages than those more remote out-of-state firms, thus keeping First State communities and businesses up-and-running when power crisis strikes.

Michele Reynolds, President of Blue Hen Utilities, Inc., capitalized on the lack of medium-high voltage services contractors in the State of Delaware in late 2014.  Aging infrastructure, increased reliability, and the desire to create a local company with local employees led to the formulation of Blue Hen Utility Services, Inc.

To bring her high-medium voltage plans to fruition, Michele needed a sharp team that was up to the challenge. Her husband and long-time business partner Michael Reynolds, Vice President of Blue Hen Utility Services, would bring his field operations expertise to the team. Then, Michele and Mike would reach out to longtime construction executive Ted Kelly, Vice President of Blue Hen Utility Services, to develop corporate marketing strategies, business development initiatives, and operational procedures.

Throughout their first 18 months of business, Blue Hen Utility Services, Inc., has been fortunate to have worked for numerous clients completing their aerial and underground distribution projects. They had the opportunity to collaborate with business owners, vendors, and supply houses, and one common theme consistently rang true. Blue Hen Utility Services, Inc. successfully fulfilled the urgent need for additional utility service contractors to meet the demand of increased electrical service reliability. Furthermore, Michele set her sights on obtaining her Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) certification which was the required supplier diversity certification recognized by the power companies. She did so in late 2015.

This summer, by remaining focused on their business plan and living the company’s vision statement, “Relentless pursuit of excellence in delivering Best in Class service for our clients”, Michele and her team were able to secure business with the local power company. Throughout Blue Hen Utility Services, Inc’s calculated and steady growth they had the continuous support of their financial partner, Wilmington Savings Fund Society (WSFS). In acknowledging the relationship, Michele stated that, “We are extremely pleased with our ongoing partnership with WSFS, they have afforded us the opportunity to grow our company and provide quality local employment for Delawareans.”

Thanks to Michele’s leadership and the firms’ ever-expanding team – Blue Hen Utility Services, Inc. is a true workplace family. With time, Michele looks to “pay her success forward,” mentoring other female entrepreneurs who, like herself, own businesses in male dominated fields. For Michele, persistence and doing what makes you happy are the keys to success, in business and in life.
