Author Beth Ann Scullin-Oliphant published her first children’s book, Briton’s Beach Adventures – Dolphins Surprise, in March during the early stages of COVID. The colorful, interactive book is ideal for children from birth to beginner reader, and came at a time when families slowed down and read together.

Marketing a new self-published book during COVID presented many challenges. Signings, readings and all other planned events were cancelled. So Beth Ann took hold of the increased popularity of Zoom and did countless virtual readings to classrooms up and down the east coast. She also managed to get on the shelves of several local stores – Browseabout Books in Rehoboth, DE; Dalrymple’s Card & Gift Shoppe and The Book Nook in Sea Isle City, NJ; and Sanctuary Boutique Store in Carlisle, PA.

“The new challenges of COVID allowed me to dedicate more time to marketing the first book and to finish writing the second,” Beth Ann said.

Inspired by her oldest son’s adventures at the seashore, Beth Ann transformed her verbal stories and put pen to paper, creating the concept of the book series. Dolphins Surprise is a delightful story of Briton’s first encounter with dolphins. The books to follow in the series further explore Briton’s personal experiences and the creatures he discovers. The next book is set to launch Spring 2021 and will be a ghostly adventure!

Bio

A native of Philadelphia, Beth Ann grew up spending her summers at the shore. Her parents would say she was born with sand in her toes. At Egg Harbor Township High School, in New Jersey, a teacher strongly encouraged and supported her writing ambitions. Beth Ann continued onto college at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, graduating with a degree in Journalism. Following graduation, she moved to Delaware and married. Her first son Briton was born the day she was to walk for her Masters Degree at Wilmington University. He is the original inspiration behind the book series. Briton’s curiosity and eagerness to learn is a joy to watch and is contagious. Trailing in his sandy footprints are his younger siblings Amelia and Judah.
