Finding Your Courage To Change
By Joe White
We have all been there at some point in our lives. We feel stuck, like we are in a rut and don’t know how to get out of it. Maybe we don’t know what we want to do with our lives, or perhaps we are struggling with a personal problem that we can’t seem to overcome. Whatever the reason, we feel paralyzed, and we don’t know how to move forward. The longer we stay stuck, the deeper it feels.
Unpredictable changes in life can cause us to feel stuck. It often creates the illusion of a double bind. There is a “damned if I do” and “damned if I don’t” scenario. If we are not prepared for change and don’t know how to deal with it, we stay stuck because we think staying where we are is better than moving forward into the unknown. Crazy right?
But can it actually be a good thing? Well, let us explore this idea more deeply.
Feeling “stuck,” as uncomfortable as it may feel, is sort of like a dashboard light in your car: an indicator or warning light that perhaps is really a sign that you need to make a bigger shift in your life. Or maybe you want to learn how to find your passion or purpose in life again. Sometimes getting back on track means making some changes that require courage and strength, but taking control of our lives is worth the effort.
For 23 years, I have coached and seen amazing transformations. Individuals stuck for years in depression and anxiety, relationships on the verge of divorce, young adults going down destructive paths, and people who feel they have lost their purpose and direction.
As I have coached my clients, the good news is that we can right the ship. Now, I am not saying that it is always easy, but I am saying it is possible when you are committed.
There are three stages of transformation:
1. Awareness
We must be aware of the patterns we are running, and what the consequences are of not changing now. Awareness is essential, but it doesn’t create actual change.
2. Unconditional & Absolute Willingness
This can be tough. It is easy to be motivated at the beginning or when you feel you have no choice. Real change is often like a marathon. Finding that motivation and inspiration through the whole process is a must. If not, we will stall or backslide.
3. Massive, Consistent, Persistent Action
No dabbling or sticking in just your toe. If you want the growth, and where the growth will lead you, you must go ALL IN. Partial efforts lead to partial results and significant disappointment.
Sometimes we wait for the perfect time to begin. There is no “perfect” moment. I can reassure you the perfect time is always NOW. Change is rarely convenient. Perhaps that is one of the reasons why some will decide to do anything to live their extraordinary life, and others simply talk about how someday they will change.
Remember this. You can do this. You were not born on this earth to be average or settle for less than you deserve. An amazing thing happens when you just begin the process. You may feel some doubt or uncertainty, but just on the other side of that, you will find a level of faith and strength you never realized you had!!
Until next time, Rattle The Cage
