Geezers On The Go
By John Nelson
An astonished young couple paused by our campsite, looking at us and then at a small sign we displayed near our trailer. It read: “Geezers on the Go.”
“Are you them?” the woman asked.
“Yep, that’s us,” my wife Jill answered.
“We know you from YouTube,” she said. “My parents watch you all the time. I’m trying to get them to get out and do things like you guys do, but they justsit around the house.”
That was several years ago now, and, yes, we’re still on the go despite both of us being in our 70s. I’m John and, well, you just met my wife, Jill.
Together, we started our “Geezers on the Go” YouTube channel a little more than four years ago and have posted more than 100 videos from campgrounds all up and down the East Coast.
Since we dropped our first video on Meaher State Park in Spanish Fort, Alabama on May 25, 2021, we’ve built an average viewership of more 4,000 per month.
It’s not the statistics that matter to us so much, though. It’s these kinds of interactions with fellow campers that keep us motivated.
Plus, we just like to go camping.
We live in our 27-foot Jayco Whitehawk for about five months out of every year, escaping the cold New York winters by heading south, ranging from New York and Pennsylvania, through Appalachia and as far down as Louisiana and Texas.
We like to think we’ve helped a lot of campers find a lot of campgrounds where they can make memories and meet Geezers on the Go like us.
So, who are we? First off, we’ve been married for 46 years and started camping long before we began making videos about it. We both have storytellers’ backgrounds.
Jill is a New Jersey native and has been a sportswriter, outdoors writer and travel writer and photographer, and she has worked for dozens of newspapers and magazines.
John (that’s me) is a native of Washington State and a longtime Associated Press sportswriter — before getting into TV as a FOX Sports vice president and senior editor.
Recently, a lady of some obvious camping experience asked us, “How old do you have to be to be a Geezer on the Go?”
I answered immediately, “It’s more a state of mind.”
Oh, and of course, you must constantly be on the go . . . so, like I always say at the end of our videos, we’ll see you down the road.
