Delaware Solid Waste Authority’s Education Program

In an era when environmental consciousness and sustainable practices are more critical than ever, the Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) has taken an inspiring initiative to educate, enlighten, and empower the next generation. Through its comprehensive Environmental Education Program, DSWA equips teachers, students, scout groups, and various organizations with the tools and knowledge to become stewards of the environment.

Aiming for a Greener Future At the heart of the program lies a profound commitment to saving natural resources and safeguarding the environment through recycling and reliable solid waste management practices. With a vision to instill a sense of environmental stewardship among students, DSWA combines classroom learning with interactive and hands-on activities, creating a holistic educational experience.

1. Field Trips: A visit to DSWA’s Environmental Education Building in New Castle immerses students in the world of waste management. Through interactive exhibits, students gain experiential knowledge about landfills, household hazardous waste, composting, and natural resources. The highlight of the visit is a bus tour of the Delaware Recycling Center, the state’s sole sorting and processing facility. This real-world experience deepens understanding and offers insights into the recycling process. Students also have the chance to practice their recycling skills on a live-action conveyor belt.

2. Virtual Programs: For those unable to visit in person, DSWA provides virtual programs that cover recycling and can be tailored to include topics such as composting, soils, or natural resources.

3. School Outreach Program: DSWA brings recycling education directly to schools, catering to various group sizes. Whether it’s an assembly for an entire grade level or a presentation for a school’s green team, the outreach program delivers a 45-minute session, complete with engaging content and a possible visit from “Trash Can Dan.”

4. Adult/Special Group Presentations: Recognizing that learning knows no age limits, DSWA extends its education program to adult groups. These

presentations, available at the environmental education centers or through outreach, demystify the dos Delaware Solid Waste Authority’s Education Program Diverse Learning Opportunities DSWA offers various engaging programs designed to cater to different age groups and learning preferences.
