Spring Clean Your Body

Spring is a time of new beginnings and new growth.  Every year my mom would make my brother and I help Spring clean the house.  It always felt like such a chore though the end result always felt very rewarding. Now, as an adult I like to Spring clean my house and body.

Although the human body is built to detoxify itself, given the amount of toxic chemicals in our environment it has become increasingly important to give it as much help as possible.  Fruits and vegetables are full of vitamins, minerals, and many contain detoxifying properties.  Kale is very high in fiber, protein, and carotenoids. Dandelion greens are detoxifiers of the lungs and liver. Beets are high in iron and purify the blood. Parsley is a blood cleanser. Cilantro helps break down heavy metals such as mercury.  Avocados assist in lowering bad cholesterol.  Berries are high in antioxidants.  Apples contain pectin, a soluble fiber that helps remove food additives and heavy metals.  Cinnamon is a blood sugar stabilizer.

We are happy to be serving smoothies with fresh organic ingredients.  While many people still think of smoothies as fruit blended with ice cream or yogurt, health food advocates tend to refer to smoothies as fruits and/or veggies blended with such things as coconut water, almond milk, and even plain water.  Other healthy things can be added such as hemp, flax or chia seeds and even some of the green “super-foods” like barley grass, wheatgrass, and Spirulina.  Fresh herbs and spices can also be added.  The health benefits of all these things – fruits, veggies, seeds and super-foods are almost endless. What a great way to get in multiple servings of nature’s powerful medicine.

Fresh Thymes, a quaint cafe nestled near Trolley Square in Wilmington, DE provides a local, organic, and seasonal food experience.  We also provide gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian, and omnivore options.  Jenn Adams, originally from Illinois,  grew up in a farming family.  Her mission is to educate and provide quality local and organic food for the community.  More information can be found at www.facebook.com/freshthymes.
