New You

Sunshine on my shoulder makes me happy, however it can really dry and damage my hair and skin. Make sure you are prepared for what lies ahead. The sun, our star, which is 93,000,000 miles from earth has the ability to either give life or death and must be respected as a quick route to aging.  Preparation looks like having fresh products for both skin and hair because these do have a shelf life, and old products will not perform in this battle. Ultraviolet radiation from the sun is serious. Clients often are not in a habit of applying sun protection to the hair fiber and skin every day. People don’t realize that it takes a short time for the rays that feel so good to deteriorate the skin and hair in both appearance and function.  I recommend Skin Ceuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense sunscreen. I like that it is weightless and provides broad-spectrum coverage with a 100% physical barrier. It is a mineral based Zinc Oxide formula which is paraben free, chemical free, and has a lovely tint which works well for universal skin tones. I keep a habit of applying it everyday after I brush my teeth, this way I never miss a day.

Hair also needs protection. My favorite one is Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil. I like a lightweight oil that won’t make hair heavy and that I can reapply for days when I am out in the sunny sunshine for long periods of time. Remembering to reapply is so important because the sun’s rays don’t let up and oils can evaporate in the heat as the day goes on. It doesn’t take very long at all to create damage to hair. The fibers are delicate, so protect them.

Today, after doing corrective color on a new client, I was reminded of just how fragile the human hair fiber is, as well as the human. Often times I have a client who has experienced a hair trauma. Something in the communication, application, or cut, just goes terribly wrong. After the damage is done people come to me to save them. A lot of my education came from figuring out how much the hair can take before it snaps or the ends fray. Also the human soul is usually under great fear and often emotions are strong during these times. Often we can not fix the problem in one sitting. Hair fiber that has lots of holes in it (as seen under a microscope) will not hold color. So in these cases, a Keratin treatment is a great way to close the hair fiber up, sealing it, so you don’t lose all the corrective work. Keratins are traditionally used to take out frizz, make the hair easier to blow dry and style, plus block the effects of humidity, and repair the hair, but in the case of corrective color it is a life and hair saver! The treatment lasts 5 months.
