CLOGGED DRAIN DISDAIN
No one likes a clogged drain. They always seem to stop up at the most inconvenient times – like when you’re expecting dinner guests. To avoid
such untimely mishaps, heed the following tips:
•  Never pour grease down the drain.  Keep a resealable jar under the sink to pour grease in, and then throw it out when it’s full.
•  Once a week, pour a pot full of boiling water down the kitchen drain to help remove any grease that is sticking in the pipes.
•  In the laundry room, be sure to remove lint from the washer so it won’t enter the pipes.
•  If you should stop up a sink and can’t dislodge the mess with a plunger or boiling water, sometimes pouring about ¼ cup of baking soda followed by twice as much vinegar will fizz the clog away.  If none of these methods work, it’s time to call our professional plumbers to handle the job.

Brian and Robbie Frederick just renewed all of their company business licenses while completing their 2010 business plan. Before being able to purchase or renew a business license in the State of Delaware, the State requires you to show proof of worker’s compensation and liability insurance. On top of that, it is mandatory to purchase state and multiple county, city and municipality licenses to do business in those areas. Brian and Robbie want homeowners to understand how important it is, when hiring a general contractor, to choose one who uses licensed sub-contractors. Licensed sub-contractors must satisfy criteria required by New Castle County (www.nccdelu.org).

Believe it or not, the tiny state of Delaware has over 1300 licensed plumbers! However, only a small fraction of these plumbers is in business legitimately. Just because a plumber has a plumbing license doesn’t mean that he has a business license to legally do business in Delaware. Homeowners, in order to protect themselves, should verify that their plumber has the following credentials:
• Is properly insured
• Holds a business license from the State of Delaware
• When required, pulls a permit for the work being performed
• Is a member of the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org)
• Is a membership of the Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractors (PHCC) Association, both locally and nationally (www.phcc.org)
• Is actively involved in his community.

Knowing this information ahead of time will clear the way for much better service and a job well done. Homeowners should also understand that, before an individual tests for a masters plumbing license in the State of Delaware, he must complete 4 years of post secondary education, 8000 hours of on the job training, and an additional 2 years of work in the trade. As part of an effort to reduce dependence on foreign sources of energy, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 provides a tax credit to help offset the costs of making energy efficiency improvements to your home.
Some key details of the program are as follows:

• The tax credits apply to a variety of products (including installation costs such as windows, doors, heating & cooling equipment,
and more).
• The amount of the credit is equal to 30% of the installed cost of the qualifying products, up to a total
of $1500.
• If a qualifying purchase is not large enough to qualify for the maximum tax credit of $1500, the remaining available tax credit can be claimed for additional qualifying purchases.
• The tax credits, unlike deductions, are subtracted directly from the total amount you owe in personal income taxes.
• If you’re planning to take advantage of this tax credit program, you must purchase your qualifying high-efficiency product between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010.

Joseph Frederick & Sons launched its new Bath and Kitchen Remodeling Division, under the leadership of Steve Kivler, in August 2009. Kivler, an expert in both design and construction, joins Joseph Frederick & Sons with more than 20 years of experience in the residential remodeling construction industry.
