“There is so much to treating the overall health and well being of a person than just addressing their symptoms when an acute illness occurs. I like to focus on what is going on with a person’s health every day. It’s the little things that are really important in the long run. What kind of nutrients we are taking in and how that affects how our bodies and minds work. Another example of how closely our minds and bodies are intertwined was demonstrated in a study that showed how a cosmetic medical treatment, such as a rhinoplasty, can have the same benefit to mood and well being as 10 years of intensive psycho-therapy. Our bodies and minds are very closely related and I really embrace this concept in my practice.”

Dr. Parsons lives in Bethany Beach area with her husband and young son, who is a fifth generation Sussex Countian. Dr. Parsons sees patients in her office in Rehoboth Beach during the week. Appointments can be made by calling 302-227-1079. Everett, MD, MHA

With the holiday season upon us, it’s important to keep focused on healthy eating habits despite the multitude of temptations.

Adhering to a healthy diet can be especially tricky at this time of year. Holiday festivities traditionally revolve around food and the pressure to overindulge can be a real issue for those watching the scale. Between holiday parties at the office, gatherings at the houses of friends and family, and even your own kitchen, it isn’t hard to understand why statistically Americans gain 1-10 pounds each year during the holiday months from Thanksgiving through Valentines Day.

To avoid packing on the pounds during this festive time of year, it’s imperative to make wise food choices. That doesn’t mean denying yourself the pleasures of the food around you, but is does mean using discretion when making your food choices.

Portion control is the name of the game. For those “must have” holiday favorites, select smaller portion sizes to limit your caloric intake without feeling deprived. Resist the unconscious urge to taste everything that is set before you. Rather than filling your plate with piles upon piles of food, dish out appetizer-sized servings.

If you are going to a holiday party, do not go on an empty stomach. Instead, eat something light and drink plenty of water before going. The less hungry you are to start, the less likely you are to overeat. In addition, limit your alcohol consumption at such events. Besides being calorie-packed, alcohol can make you lose your inhibitions and eat more than you originally intend to.

Instead of baking your famous holiday cookies for friends and family, make holiday crafts. Homemade candles, holiday ornaments, herbal tea sets, and decorative gift baskets are just as festive minus the temptations to over indulge in your own goodies. When the weather turns cold, the temptation is to keep the chill away by turning to warm and typically carbohydrate-loaded “comfort foods.” Throw on your fuzzy socks, turn on the fire place, and stick with your normal eating routine. Don’t use the chilly weather as an excuse to forgo physical activity, but rather as an opportunity to go ice skating, skiing, or snowboarding. Outdoor power walking is actually invigorating this time of year, as outdoor activities warm you up quickly without the oppressive heat of the summer. This is also a great time to take advantage of the great specials at your local gym. Take a “hot yoga” class or treat yourself to 20 minutes in the steam room or sauna (after your 30 minutes on the elliptical, of course).

Above all else, remember that the holidays are really about family and friends, not food. Keep your focus on the real meaning of this season and enjoy!

Dr. Linda G. Everett is the founder and medical director of Everett Medical: Weightloss and Age Management. Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Age Management Medicine. Dr. Everett has extensive training and experience in Bariatric and Preventive Medicine. She received her undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University, and her medical degree from Jefferson Medical College. Dr. Everett is on the medical staff of both Christiana Care Health System and Jennersville Regional hospital, and is a member of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians.

She grew up with in a family who encouraged her entrepreneurial spirit and began her first company at age 13. Jill fell in love with off price retailing while working along with her father and other notable off priced mass merchants. Jill spent the first thirteen years of her career working with technology companies hiring top talent and helping to grow organizations but she knew there was something better for her. In late 2004 Jill moved to North Wilmington, Delaware and could not find the shopping experience she missed from the small unique retailers that she frequented while living in New Hope, PA and the Manayunk section of Philadelphia and from that need, she opened LuLu’s in the Booths Corner Farmers Market. In 2010 LuLu’s won Philly’s Hot List and the clientele includes women of all ages. New at LuLu in 2010 is the addition of LuLu’s to Go, a traveling boutique which allows groups of women to shop from their home or office. Jill is very active in the support of many local groups and has a special place in her heart for the March of Dimes. Jill is the mother of two very special babies who were both born prematurely and knows that there is no job more important than that of just being there for her daughters.

She soon discovered that yoga instruction was her calling & decided to transition out of the publishing world & into the world of teaching.

She has gone on to receive certification in Unnata® Aerial Yoga, a new technique of yoga that allows students to decompress their spine, and move into more advanced postures with the support of aerial silks. Heather will be bringing the first Aerial Yoga Studio to DE this April with the Grand opening of Kaya Wellness & Yoga in Rehoboth Beach.
Goodstay

Goodstay, built in 1732, was originally a working farm named Green Hill. The gardens are among the oldest in the state and many original features remain today just as they were described by Howard Pyle who lived at Green Hill Farm as a boy in the 1850’s.

After a number of distinguished owners, Margaretta Lammot duPont bought the property in 1868 and renamed it “Goodstay” after the very first duPont home in Bergen Point, New Jersey which was named “Bon Sejour.” Upon her death, the property was sold to her nephew, T. Coleman duPont in 1911. His Daughter, Ellen duPont Meeds (later Wheelwright), who received the house on her wedding day, modified the house to what we see today. She and her husband, landscape architect Robert Wheelwright, restored and enhanced the Tudor style gardens, adding the magnificent magnolia walk and reflecting pool in 1938.

Upon Ellen Wheelwright’s death in 1968, the house and gardens were donated to the University of Delaware. Goodstay Center is used exclusively as a conference center hosting a variety of events from business meeting to wedding receptions. The Friends of Goodstay Gardens, a volunteer organization, helps maintain the gardens, which provide a lovely backdrop for wedding ceremonies and other events.

Carla Bobka knows relationships.

Out of the office, Carla is a Midwest transplant who traded Iowa winters for the East Coast and a man she has since dubbed ‘Superman’. Together they are mom and dad to two talented daughters and a Corgie named Cookie. The family has deep roots in their Landenberg community, giving back to philanthropic, secular, and academic institutions with whom they’ve built lasting relationships.

In the office, Carla has built her career upon this very idea – that relationships are at the core of successful models. Over the years she’s been the relationship strategist for clients like Citibank, Potter Anderson, and AstraZeneca.

In recent years, Carla saw the opportunity in social media for businesses to better engage with their customers, and started her company – SocialPie – to help them do just that. She uses her skills to help demystify and streamline the social media experience for businesses.

The Bobkas know how to make the people who impact them feel valued. Every year, the family bakes dozens of cookies for the people who mean the most to them. Last year, the count rose to 114. As Carla sees it: “It’s a ball to make someone’s day”.

And through SocialPie, she helps her clients make their customers feel exactly the same way.

Marcy Wilkinson

Marcy Wilkinson owns and operates J. Christian Studio with her husband J. Christian. “If someone would have told me two years ago I’d be working in the beauty industry I’d probably laughed hysterically!” After being laid off from Genesis Healthcare 18 months ago, Marcy brought her business and organizational development skills to the salon.

“The front desk at the salon is a goldmine of networking opportunities.” We meet women and men from all walks of life. Hearing their dreams, aspirations, accomplishments and commitments inspires me to connect people with complimentary attributes and objectives.

We’ve seen the positive effects of these synergistic relationships in our philanthropic work. People are motivated by a positive sense of community, they’re proud to be involved and making contributions. Parents are glad to involve their children in the work we do here.
The salon recently celebrated its 3rd anniversary and we are proud to say we’ve helped raise nearly $100k worthwhile charities like Supporting Kidds, Autism Delaware, Ronald McDonald House and Hospice Delaware.

It’s an understatement to say moving out of a rather large corporate environment into the small business environment of the beauty industry was culture shock! But surprisingly, this move turned out to be the perfect place to grow my professional and interpersonal skills on a level unavailable to me otherwise.

Lois Wilkinson

Lois Wilkinson joined the staff of DBCC in 2004 after volunteering on the first SLOL in Kent County. Lois currently coordinates the Peer Mentor Program in Kent County. The peer mentor program provides one on one support and education to those newly diagnosed with breast cancer. We also provide education about clinical trials to help patients understand why clinical trials are important and how they work. Along with matching up newly diagnosed patients to a trained peer mentor Lois also helps train and educate the mentors. She is also responsible for contacting physicians and hospitals throughout the state of Delaware to help market and implement the Peer Mentor Program.

Lois runs the Beginning Your Pink Ribbon Journey in Partnership with Bayhealth Cancer Institute in Dover and Milford. Beginning Your Pink Ribbon Journey is a state wide program that helps newly diagnosed patients understand their breast cancer and learn about resources that are available to them.

Lois joined DBCC two years after her diagnosis of breast cancer. She was able to bring her experiences as a survivor to Kent and Sussex Counties and form a large base of dedicated survivors and volunteers into the DBCC family. Lois also coordinates various workshops and educational seminars for breast cancer survivors as well as other forms of fellowship activities for survivors.

Lois also was instrumental in starting the popular Nurture with Nature Program. This program takes survivors out into nature and gives them a chance to unwind, relax, form bonds with other survivors and relieves the stress brought on by their diagnosis of breast cancer.

Lois graduated from the University of Delaware with a Bachelor of Science degree. Lois grew up in Middletown, Delaware and moved to Dover when she married her husband, Mike. In her spare time Lois enjoys gardening, travel, shelling, and kayaking.

Rena Howard

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1994 at age 58, had a left mastectomy with a Tramflap reconstruction, and followed by a clinical trial study of chemotherapy. At the time I was working as a Staff Development Specialist in the Medical Nursing department at Wilmington Hospital.

After I retired in 1998 I volunteered with the DBCC. My first job was to set up an education program to inform and educate the public about breast cancer. This program became successful and is now our Annual Update with world renowned speakers. I have been involved with Maureen Lauderbach in setting up education information sessions with Delaware Technical and Community College that are now mandatory curriculum for nursing students. I have served on the Board of Trustees for 10 years.

I found that the diagnosis did not hinder me; it made me more aware of how precious life is. Working with women as a mentor has been my great reward. Facing each day was made easier by my loving husband and LOTS of wonderful friends and neighbors. To spread our word and showing that long term survival is possible. I also am an alternate for Vicki Cooke on the National Breast Cancer Coalition Inc, Board of Directors. I was accepted and completed Project Lead, an advocacy training conference about the science of breast cancer research and public policy. “If you can’t be a good example- then you’ll just have to be a horrible warning.” C Aird

Vicky Cooke

Vicky Cooke is the Executive Director of the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition. Vicky has spent over forty years in non-profit management and as a seventeen year breast cancer survivor transformed the totally grassroots volunteer organization into an effective statewide organization with innovative, successful programs on breast health issues; early detection awareness; peer-mentoring and resources for those newly diagnosed and re-diagnosed and collaborative efforts with hospitals statewide, to further research through clinical trials.

Vicky serves on the board of the National Breast Cancer Coalition, the Biden Breast Health Initiative, and Cancer Care Connection. She is a graduate of NBCC’s Project LEAD and Quality LEAD, training in the science of breast cancer. She serves as a member of the Delaware Cancer Consortium and other cancer advocacy groups.

Always looking to the next challenge ahead of her, Vicky empowers others around her and is an inspiration to those affected by the disease.

Chen Wang

Chen Wang is an intellectual property law attorney and manager of a staff of IP attorneys and paralegal in DuPont’s Legal department based in Wilmington, Delaware.

Chen was first personally touched by breast cancer through her mother’s diagnosis, which was a shock for the entire family as there had been no family history, and given the low statistics for breast cancer in Asians. Her ob/gyn suggested that Chen obtain a baseline mammogram while her mother recovered from a single mastectomy. On the day her mother completed her chemotherapy treatment, Chen was advised of her own breast cancer diagnosis, at age 36. Chen focused on her positive prognosis through surgical treatment, and the aspect that she was getting a new figure, to embrace her double mastectomy and reconstructive surgeries with optimism. The knowledge she gained from helping her mother through surgical recovery minimized fear of the unknown. For the first time, she willingly accepted help from her friends and family, especially her former in-laws and her sister.

Through surviving breast cancer, Chen found a desire to contribute to beating the disease, a renewed appreciation of her family and friends, and a focus on the daily positive little things. Chen walked into the new office location of the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition in Wilmington four and one-half years ago with the desire to volunteer, and currently mentors breast cancer patients and serves as the Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees. She chooses to see the positive side of life’s daily challenges.

Lori Zytkowicz is living her dreams as the Owner/Innkeeper of Faunbrook B&B in West Chester, PA, and a PA licensed Auctioneer with Briggs Auction, Inc. of Garnet Valley, PA.
The B&B started with a passion, and became a reality in March 2008. Having spent nearly 20 years in the publishing and education fields, Lori followed her dream and now spends countless hours entertaining guests, preparing gourmet breakfasts and hosting weddings, meetings and many other life celebrations.
“I always wanted a B&B,” Zytkowicz says. Zytkowicz believes that things always happen for a reason. “A good friend of mine was married here years ago and stayed for an anniversary. We wanted to buy, the owners wanted to sell, and if it wasn’t for sharing my dream along the way, we never would have known that purchasing the property was an option. I am in love with the house!”
Faunbrook is an 1860’s Victorian mansion with a prominent West Chester history. Owned by the Darlington family for nearly 100 years, the house stands with much of its original architecture and splendor. With seven warmly decorated guest rooms, five fireplaces and two acres of gardens and fountains, Faunbrook is the ideal setting for local getaways and special occasions for 2 to 85 guests.
As for the auction business, it is in her blood, as her father has been an auctioneer for nearly thirty years. Lori worked with her dad and a family friend in the auction business starting at a young age, and obtained her PA auctioneer’s license in 2007, starting the Real Estate division of Briggs Auction, Inc. in January of 2008.
Whether it be through hosting a non-profit event, donating an overnight stay or calling for bidders at a benefit auction, Lori believes strongly in giving back to the community. Some local charities that have benefited from these services include ACHIEVE-Ability, Domestic Violence Center of Chester County, Mommy’s Light, Bridge of Hope, United Way, Safe Harbor of Greater West Chester. KW Cares, Alzheimer’s Association and Adopt A Pig.
Sharing her daily tasks is her husband, Steve, who is the B&B’s bookkeeper, and an incredible cook and handyman. Never far behind is her loyal companion, SPCA adopted Rottweiler mix, Draven, who follows her every step of the way.
Lori is very grateful for the family, friends and colleagues who have given their time, finances and support for her new endeavor. Her motto is to Live one moment at a time, but always to its fullest!

If you are looking for a day of pampering and relaxation, you will most likely find what you need at a day spa. If you want skin care or an advanced level of results but still want to be pampered, you will find that at Nouveau Medispa. We provide facials, waxings, massage, laser and light therapies, micro-dermabrasions, peels, spray tanning, fillers, Botox, body detoxification, and much more. Our main focus is to provide superior education on skin health, wellness and anti-aging.

Executive Chef & General Manager
The Back Burner Restaurant
Hockessin, DE
302-239-2314

Kristin McGuigan is the successful chef of one of the state’s staple upscale restaurants, The Back Burner, in Hockessin. She is passionate about her cooking and wants every customer to enjoy their dining experience. Kristin takes pride in her food; from the seasoning to the presentation, she strives for perfection and wants her staff to be just as passionate.
Kristin began her career in the hospitality industry at the age of fifteen. She was employed at the Hotel DuPont under Chef Tom Hannum. Kristin started in the comesary and worked her way up to dinner line cook. After three years with the company she entered the Culinary Arts program at Johnson & Wales in Rhode Island. After her time there she returned to the Hotel DuPont and continued building her career. She then decided that if she was going to fully understand the hospitality business she would have to work all aspects of it. Kristin took the next 4 years working as a bartender and front of the house manager at other local restaurants. Kristin then returned back to the kitchens and is now the Executive Chef and General Manager of the Back Burner, and could not be happier. She says she gets her inspiration and motivation from long talks with her mother every night after work.
When Kristin is not working she is spending time with her boyfriend Brandon, fixing up their new home they purchased this past year. Spending time with her family and friends is her favorite past time. Her favorite quote is, “Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it is about learning how to dance in the rain.”

A Milford Delaware native, Chrissy Sarro, a five year employee of Nage Restaurant in Rehobeth, DE and in Washington DC, encouraged owners, Kevin Reading and Josh Grapski, to look into a former Milford restaurant location that was available.

Having been in the food and beverage industry for over twenty years, the former owner of the popular Library Square Cafe in Milford, knew there was definitely a niche in the loyal and supportive community of Milford, DE. Taking her up on the suggestion, Abbott’s Grill soon became part of their repertoire and Chrissy became an integral part of the critical transition phase of the opening of Abbott’s Grill in December of 2009. Abbott’s Grill has become the place to meet in Milford.

In addition to owning her own restaurant, Sarro has served in every aspect of the restaurant business. A self-taught accomplished chef in her own right, waiting tables, tending bar, hostessing, catering, management, as well as whole sale food sales are all apart of her resume. Nage’s owners soon realized her charismatic style and talents in marketing and sales equaled her abilities as a caterer. She is currently serving Abbott’s Grill in Milford and Nage Restaurant in Rehoboth with her personalized banquet service, subtle though capable management skills and her energetic, outgoing personality.
