Anthony B. Furey, DO

Dr. Anthony B. Furey joined Cardiology Physicians in March 2011.  Dr. Furey has been a Cardiologist in Delaware since 1996.  Dr. Furey grew up in Chadds Ford PA. He attended Bishop Shanahan High School and Lafayette College where he obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology.  During his four years at Lafayette, he lettered in Varsity Basketball and was Captain of the 1983 squad.

Dr. Furey attended Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. His post doctorate training involved internship at Doctors Hospital in Columbus, OH, and Internal Medicine residency at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, PA.  His Cardiology fellowship was completed at The Graduate Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA.

Dr. Furey is board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He has been recognized as board certified in Adult Echocardiography by the American Society of Echocardiography and Nuclear Cardiology by the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology.

Dr. Furey’s professional associations include membership in the American Osteopathic Association, Delaware Society of Osteopathic Medicine, Delaware Medical Society, American Society of Echocardiography, American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, and Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.

Charles J. Simon, MS, OD, is the founder and CEO of Simon Eye Associates.  A native Delawarean, Dr. Simon grew up in Dover, Delaware, graduating from Dover High School.  He then attended the University of Delaware, obtaining an undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences, and a graduate degree in Nutritional Sciences.  An additional degree in Visual Sciences and a Doctorate in Optometry was earned from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry.

Dr. Simon completed externships in primary care at the JFK Hospital Eye Clinic, and in electro-diagnosis and low vision at The Eye Institute, all in Philadelphia.  He continued with post-doctoral studies at the National Eye Institute in Bethesda, Maryland.

He began practicing Optometry in 1982, along with becoming an Assistant Professor at the University of Delaware.  Since starting his own practice, he has expanded from his first office on Bancroft Parkway in Wilmington to become a multi-location practice serving all of Delaware and surrounding areas.  Simon Eye Associates now employs 14 Doctors and over 100 staff members.  Dr. Simon attributes the growth of the practice to his firm commitment to satisfying the eye health needs of his patients.  The mission statement of the practice reflects this belief:

Ronald Lee Sayers, goes by Ron Sayers is 66 years old and originally from Pennsylvania.   At age 5 his parents, Leroy and June Sayers moved to Smyrna Delaware and opened Sayers Jewelers.   From the beginning Ron was given chores in the store such as counting envelopes, inserting letters and adding stamps.

Ron Graduated from John Bassett Moore High School in Smyrna then went on to Wesley College in Dover which was a 2 year school at the time and then transferred to Delaware State College and graduated with a business and accounting degree.  After joining the family business full time in 1968 Ron began taking courses at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA ) where he earned his Graduate Gemologist degree.

In 1967 Ron married Ellen Killen from Leipsic, Delaware.   Ron and Ellen have three boys,  Ronnie, a commercial waterman,   Rodney, a boilermaker and Tom,who works in the family business and is also a GIA Graduate Gemologist.

Ron and Ellen have worked side by side in the family business since 1968.  In 1989 They purchased the business from Ron’s parents and it became Sayers Jewelers and Gemologists.   Ron, Ellen and son Tom along with seven other employees run the thriving business today.   Sayers was the first jeweler in Kent County to have a gem microscope in their store and Ron was the first jeweler in all of Delaware  to have a high tech Laser welder.   Ron and son Tom also design and manufacture custom jewelry on the premises using state of the art Cad-Cam designing as well as hand carved designs.   Sayers is proud to have customers in 48 states.

Ron has served as Past President of the Smyrna-Clayton Rotary club and currently sits on the board of the Central Delaware Chamber of Commerce and Bayhealth Medical Center.

Interests include snowmobiling, skiing, motorcycles, photography, scuba diving, flying, boating and grandchildren.

Jeffrey Minkovitz, MD

Jeffrey Minkovitz, MD is an ophthalmologist and partner at Eye Physicians and Surgeons in Wilmington, Delaware.  Dr. Minkovitz specializes in cataract and refractive surgery, and is one of only a few Delaware surgeons specially trained in corneal diseases and transplantation. He joined Eye Physicians in 1994, after completing a cornea and refractive surgery fellowship at the world renowned Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins.  Previously, he graduated magna cum-laude from Harvard, earned his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School, completed his internship at Harvard’s Mt. Auburn Hospital, and served his ophthalmology residency at Washington University.

Dr. Minkovitz participated in the early research on Excimer Laser photorefractive surgery beginning in 1994. He has offered this procedure to Delawareans since FDA approval in 1996, before Delaware had its own laser. These early pioneering individuals travelled to Wilmer Institute with Dr. Minkovitz, where he maintained his teaching and clinical appointment.

Dr. Minkovitz is a co-founder of the Center for Advanced Surgical Arts and serves on its medical advisory board. He is also on active staff at Christiana and Wilmington Hospitals.  While at Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Minkovitz received the Outstanding Teacher Award from Wilmer Eye Institute. He was also named Top Doc in ophthalmology by Delaware Today Magazine six consecutive years, including 2010, and has been an invited instructor at the American Academy of Ophthalmology Annual Meetings.

Dr. Minkovitz served as councilor to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and has held several offices including president of the Delaware Academy of Ophthalmology.

Charles Curry, MD

Dr. Curry is a board certified ophthalmologist with Delaware Eye Institute in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Evolution of Laser Hair Therapy

We attended the Couture New York Bridal Fashion week in mid-October.  We buy bridal fashions and accessories twice a year in New York.  Vendors come from around the world to show their beautiful gowns, shoes and accessories at market.  It is certainly not too shabby to watch a runway show!  Plus, it is always good to see our sales representatives that we have been working with for years and of course meet new ones.  It was a whirlwind trip and a lot of ground was covered.

Industry analysts are predicting a good — but not great — 2011 holiday shopping season for retailers.  Consumers are expected to be more conservative and controlled.  Fewer are spending time on vacation and more are devoting time to family and friends.

Making sure you look your best this holiday season is easier when you plan ahead. We’ve scoured the web and beauty magazines for the best and brightest holiday tips and added a few of our own so you can be picture-perfect all season long without breaking the budget!

Holiday Hair Trends
This holiday season you might say that old fashioned glitter and glamour is back.
Upswept Hair and Loose Waves. A casual upswept do adds a bit of sophistication and romance to your holiday look.  This hairstyle can be worn with any kind of hair ornament and tends to look best with some curls.
Up the glam with an up-do. There is a huge variety of holiday updos to choose from that can make your hair look elegant. Updos are not limited to women with long hair.  It’s possible to put just about anyone’s hair in an updo – no matter the length, texture, or type of hair.  When creating your upstyle take into consideration the shape of your face and your outfit.  When in doubt, consult your stylist.

Plan Ahead for Lovely Locks.
If your calendar is booking up quickly with back-to-back holiday festivities and events, you’ll need to pencil in some ‘me time’ to make sure your hair and nails are ready for picture sessions and special occasion dress-up nights!
Holiday Glow Highlights and Color.  One way to keep your color budget to a minimum is to schedule a HAIRLINE TOUCHUP versus a single process color.  Want highlights, schedule with your stylist for a few foils versus a full or semi partial foiling.  A few foils, placed appropriately can add depth and richness to your hair color.
Party Proof Your Curls. Even the bounciest ringlets can drag on the dance floor.  Schedule a blow-out with your stylist versus a haircut and style.  The stylist will properly prep your curls with professional products to add much needed longevity to your look as you dance the night away.

Decorate Your ‘Do
Our passion for precious metals — real or faux — has gone to our head. Give your hairdo some holiday sparkle and glamour with one of these fun hair accessories.
Hair Glitter or Shimmer Spray. A few sprays of sparkly hair glitter or shimmer spray will instantly add a bit of holiday fun to your look.  Use sparingly, you don’t want to look like a Christmas tree.
Black Velvet Headband. The black velvet headband creates a classic holiday look that looks equally well on long or short hair.  Width is an important consideration, if your hair is a cropped style close to your head; opt for a thin black headband.
Sparkle Bobby Pins and Hair Jewels. Hair jewels are wonderful little hair accessories that look beautiful on both short and long hair.  After washing and drying your hair, stick several jewels throughout your style to pick up the light and add a bit of holiday glamour to your look.

Hottest Make-Up Trends this Holiday Season
Two looks are classic and hot right now: The smokey, shimmery eye paired with light lips and the deep red lips balanced with a light eye.  Don’t overload on the shimmer and don’t forget the golden rule: Never play up BOTH the eyes and the mouth.
Sparkling Eyes. Forget twinkle toes.  Make your eyes the center of attention with a little sparkle.  Achieve the look with glitter eye shadow and eye liner, optional: apply jeweled false eyelashes.
Glossy Lips. Plain lips become beautiful lips that look moist and dreamy with the right shade and lots of shine.  Achieve the look with shiny lipstick in shades of pink or plum, or use a non-color gloss over a subtle shade of lipstick.

All That Glitters Is Golden for Nails this Season
Splurge on at least one spa manicure or pedicure (or both) this season so that you can look your best over the holidays.  Two of the hottest trends:
Glitter Nails. Glitter adds the perfect finishing touch to beautifully manicured hands.  Achieve the look with tinted or clear glitter nail polish.  Or, add jeweled rhinestones to polished nails.
Play Up Your Nails. Glitter not your thing?  For an exciting evening look, try dark polish with a silver metallic stripe up the middle.

Frequently Asked Questions about Eyelash Extensions

What are eyelash extensions?
The extensions themselves are perfectly polished polyester points.  They are not made of natural hair or mink fur as these are not easy to work with and do not hold a curl as the extensions do.  They come in a variety of thicknesses, colors and degrees of curl.  There are various brands on the market as well as types of lashes.

How long do they last?
Your lash extensions, when properly applied, will last as long as your natural lash is attached to you.  Some will pop off, but with good adhesive and technique, you’ll be able to enjoy your lashes for a few weeks.  Our natural lashes shed about 3 to 4 lashes a day.  If an extension is attached, it will fall off with your natural lash.  Therefore, if you get a set applied and care for them delicately, you will still have lashes left in 3, 4 even 5 weeks.  To keep your lashes looking fresh, Lasting Looks recommends refining fills every 2 to 4 weeks.

How long will it take to apply the lashes?
Your appointment time depends on how many lashes you are getting.  At Lasting Looks, we like to keep eyelash extensions affordable for all budgets. Therefore, we offer different size sets: Wink, Demi and Full.  A Wink Set is 20 to 25 lashes per eye; about 45 minutes.  A Demi Set is 40 to 60 lashes per eye; about 60 to 75 minutes.  A Full Set is 70 to 100 lashes per eye; 90 to 120 minutes.  Set sizes are not universal and can be independently defined by a salon.  Be sure to ask about the number of lashes you are getting when you are booking your appointment.

Will eyelash extensions damage my own lashes?
At Lasting Looks, we are careful to document the health of your natural lashes.  We have not experienced any damage to natural lashes, even on clients that have been getting monthly lashes for over two years.  You’ll want to treat your lash extensions gently by following our aftercare instructions.

My nail salon does lash extensions for only $20.  Are these the same?
Extensions are applied one lash at a time with care and precision.  This takes time.  Other salons are offering clusters, flairs and strip lashes that take only a few minutes to apply and cost a lot less.  Individual eyelash extensions are vastly superior to these other methods and produce a completely natural but dramatic appearance when professionally applied by a trained esthetician.

My teenager wants these.  Is this recommended?
Most teens have naturally long and strong lashes and find that extensions are not necessary.  However, they are awesome for a more dramatic look when needed for Proms, Special Occasions or Senior Portraits – without fussing with clumpy mascara.  The extensions also come in a rainbow of colors for a young, fun flair.  Add rhinestones for extra bling!  Because they grow out naturally, your teen (or you!) can get a onetime set without ongoing maintenance.
