On The Cover... Our front cover photo shoot took place at the beautiful Gateway Garden Center located at 7277 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE 19707 (Phone 302-239-2727). We could not have asked for a better location to shoot our Home and Garden Business Profile. The backdrop of the garden center was like stepping in to Spring with all the beautiful garden ornaments, plants and fountains. Our profile participants come from Western Delaware County PA, New Castle County, Kent County and Sussex County, DE.
Hair and makeup were provided by J. Christian Studio, located at 7465 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE 19707, 302-235-2306, and as always they outdid themselves in making our men and women look even more stunning than usual. Photography work was provided by Roy McDowell of Royal Photography (royalphotogde@aol.com), 3646 Silverside Road, Wilmington, DE 19810 (Phone 302-478-1809). Without both Roy and J. none of our photo shoots would be possible.

Today, Brian and his brother Robbie lead Joseph Frederick & Sons, now Delaware’s premiere plumbing, electrical, heating and cooling company. “Our grandfather started this business with one truck, willingness to work, and a sense of integrity,” he said. “Robbie and I work hard to maintain those values and to provide the same level of service our family has provided since 1947.” At age 15, Brian started working at Joseph Frederick & Sons while majoring in sheet metal fabrication trade at Delcastle High School. He went to Evangel College in Springfield, Missouri, and returned to Delaware to join the family business full time in 1979. By 1998, Brian and Robbie were ready to take over Joseph Frederick & Sons, and Robbie became the company’s president. Brian took over as president in 2003. Now, Brian’s daughter Alexis Frederick has joined the company, too, making Joseph Frederick & Sons one of America’s rare fourth-generation family businesses.

Christian
of J. Christian Studio in Hockessin, DE

The Studio has always been grateful to Pam Rizzo as an avid supporter of the salon. When she mentioned a feature, I was both honored and excited for the opportunity to talk about the Studio. I’m fortunate to be a part of the international hair community. For the past 12 years, I’ve traveled the world working alongside the greatest minds in the industry. Stylists at the ‘master’ or ‘elite’ level will tell you what drives them is using their skills to enrich the lives of others. This was the guiding principal behind J Christian Studio.

Opening the Salon

The salon is a reflection of my journey as a stylist. Rich color, strong textures, a little European, a little bit of New York, cutting edge equipment. Not your average salon, but we are different for more important reasons than style and decor.

Our Vision, Mission and Values

Our vision statement: “Ensure every client who makes contact with the studio is elevated emotionally by the experience. To ensure all people look and feel better about themselves and their lives.” We know that in order to succeed must execute this vision within and BEYOND our four walls.

How – We’ve Set Pretty High Standards

1. Provide Stylists with the Environment and Education to Grow as an Artist and Entrepreneur
2. BE the “Role Model” for Customer Service
3. Better our Community through Philanthropic Focus – serve the community by providing opportunities to strengthen family, show our talent and raise funds for organizations that spend their dollars only in Delaware

Here’s an Example: “Crazy Catwalk for Kidds”

Of four events we hold each year, “Crazy Catwalk for Kidds” is probably the best example of achieving our vision. This year about 1,400 people came out in torrential rains and we raised $15,000 for Supporting Kidds.

Here’s how we measured success:

1. Of the 180 volunteers, 95% are our clients. Show vendors are by invitation only. Each vendor must serve our community and are unique in their own right. Local boutiques, health and beauty professionals, food vendors, dance teams and artists put away rivalry in exchange for community spirit and it’s so tangible that participants and attendees comment on this when they arrive.
2. Models range from 4 – 65 years. Families, friends, school mates comprise the model roster. These ladies step outside their comfort zone by relinquishing any influence over their final look for the catwalk. Women young and old experience new found confidence, daughters learn to appreciate the beauty of internal self-confidence as mothers nail the authentic interpretation of the fashion. It’s a beautiful thing to watch unfold.
3. Everyone in the salon works on the event. Defining catwalks, selecting models, entertainment, vendors and staging hair shows. This sparks innovation, motivation, and pride feeding their passion for the work they do every day.

Award Winning Salon

The salon has won several awards since opening in August 2007. Many I’m proud to say for customer service. Our goal is to be the “Role Model” cited as exemplary.

Some quotes from our clients:
“The entire staff seems to focus on taking care of the customer.”, “You don’t feel judged when you come here.”, “I don’t feel pressured here.”, “No matter what I look like or where I’m coming from, you always treat me the same.”, “You took the time on the phone to find out which stylist would be better for me and my hair type, never happened before.”.
In my view, this is exactly what owning a hair salon is about. OUR CLIENTS

Operating a salon at this level is tough. I’ve found some rare jewels in my staff. Recruiting is difficult. Stylists get comfortable and complacent. Many aren’t interested in stage shows and community service. I’ll keep looking until I find the right fit, it’s worth it.

As for me, I’ll keep practicing what I preach when I travel for Sexy Hair. Be the best, grow your passion, and use your skills to give back, be a positive influence in your community. I love owning a salon. Every day, in good times or bad, I thoroughly enjoy turning the key in the lock and flicking on the lights to start a new day at J Christian Studio.

J Christian is an award-winning, International Platform Artist and Master Educator for Sexy Hair, Los Angeles. Together with his wife Marcy they own and operate J. Christian Studio in Hockessin, DE. He travels the world and regularly teaches at the Institute of Courage, a hair academy in California founded by Michael O’Rourke. Owner Michael O’Rourke Hair. The salon is accredited by the Better Business Bureau, is the proud recipient of the Better Business Bureau 2010 Torch Award for Market Place Ethics and recent recipient of First State Favorite Salon for Women in New Castle County.

Cathy Holloway is a ten-year breast cancer survivor. She earned her BS/BA in Marketing from the University of Delaware and is the Program Director of Education and Survivorship for Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition (DBCC). Cathy coordinates and manages the statewide Peer Mentor Support Program and the Clinical Trials Initiative. Cathy dedicates a great deal of personal time providing necessary assistance and resources to those newly diagnosed or facing recurrence.

Cathy has completed scientific training through the National Breast Cancer Coalition’s Project LEAD and Clinical Trials LEAD. She is a member of the Delaware Cancer Consortium and serves as a community member on Christiana Care Health System’s Institutional Review Board (IRB). Cathy has been accepted as a consumer representative on the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Scientific Peer Review Panel and is a 2010 recipient of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Survivor Recognition award.

Cathy lobbies members of Congress in Delaware and Pennsylvania to support the legislative priorities of the National Breast Cancer Coalition. These priorities include continued and increased funding for breast cancer research as well as legislation to explore environmental causes of the disease.

Lois Wilkinson

Lois Wilkinson joined the staff of DBCC in 2004 after volunteering on the first SLOL in Kent County. Lois currently coordinates the Peer Mentor Program in Kent County. The peer mentor program provides one on one support and education to those newly diagnosed with breast cancer. We also provide education about clinical trials to help patients understand why clinical trials are important and how they work. Along with matching up newly diagnosed patients to a trained peer mentor Lois also helps train and educate the mentors. She is also responsible for contacting physicians and hospitals throughout the state of Delaware to help market and implement the Peer Mentor Program.

Lois runs the Beginning Your Pink Ribbon Journey in Partnership with Bayhealth Cancer Institute in Dover and Milford. Beginning Your Pink Ribbon Journey is a state wide program that helps newly diagnosed patients understand their breast cancer and learn about resources that are available to them.

Lois joined DBCC two years after her diagnosis of breast cancer. She was able to bring her experiences as a survivor to Kent and Sussex Counties and form a large base of dedicated survivors and volunteers into the DBCC family. Lois also coordinates various workshops and educational seminars for breast cancer survivors as well as other forms of fellowship activities for survivors.

Lois also was instrumental in starting the popular Nurture with Nature Program. This program takes survivors out into nature and gives them a chance to unwind, relax, form bonds with other survivors and relieves the stress brought on by their diagnosis of breast cancer.

Lois graduated from the University of Delaware with a Bachelor of Science degree. Lois grew up in Middletown, Delaware and moved to Dover when she married her husband, Mike. In her spare time Lois enjoys gardening, travel, shelling, and kayaking.

Rena Howard

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1994 at age 58, had a left mastectomy with a Tramflap reconstruction, and followed by a clinical trial study of chemotherapy. At the time I was working as a Staff Development Specialist in the Medical Nursing department at Wilmington Hospital.

After I retired in 1998 I volunteered with the DBCC. My first job was to set up an education program to inform and educate the public about breast cancer. This program became successful and is now our Annual Update with world renowned speakers. I have been involved with Maureen Lauderbach in setting up education information sessions with Delaware Technical and Community College that are now mandatory curriculum for nursing students. I have served on the Board of Trustees for 10 years.

I found that the diagnosis did not hinder me; it made me more aware of how precious life is. Working with women as a mentor has been my great reward. Facing each day was made easier by my loving husband and LOTS of wonderful friends and neighbors. To spread our word and showing that long term survival is possible. I also am an alternate for Vicki Cooke on the National Breast Cancer Coalition Inc, Board of Directors. I was accepted and completed Project Lead, an advocacy training conference about the science of breast cancer research and public policy. “If you can’t be a good example- then you’ll just have to be a horrible warning.” C Aird

Vicky Cooke

Vicky Cooke is the Executive Director of the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition. Vicky has spent over forty years in non-profit management and as a seventeen year breast cancer survivor transformed the totally grassroots volunteer organization into an effective statewide organization with innovative, successful programs on breast health issues; early detection awareness; peer-mentoring and resources for those newly diagnosed and re-diagnosed and collaborative efforts with hospitals statewide, to further research through clinical trials.

Vicky serves on the board of the National Breast Cancer Coalition, the Biden Breast Health Initiative, and Cancer Care Connection. She is a graduate of NBCC’s Project LEAD and Quality LEAD, training in the science of breast cancer. She serves as a member of the Delaware Cancer Consortium and other cancer advocacy groups.

Always looking to the next challenge ahead of her, Vicky empowers others around her and is an inspiration to those affected by the disease.

Chen Wang

Chen Wang is an intellectual property law attorney and manager of a staff of IP attorneys and paralegal in DuPont’s Legal department based in Wilmington, Delaware.

Chen was first personally touched by breast cancer through her mother’s diagnosis, which was a shock for the entire family as there had been no family history, and given the low statistics for breast cancer in Asians. Her ob/gyn suggested that Chen obtain a baseline mammogram while her mother recovered from a single mastectomy. On the day her mother completed her chemotherapy treatment, Chen was advised of her own breast cancer diagnosis, at age 36. Chen focused on her positive prognosis through surgical treatment, and the aspect that she was getting a new figure, to embrace her double mastectomy and reconstructive surgeries with optimism. The knowledge she gained from helping her mother through surgical recovery minimized fear of the unknown. For the first time, she willingly accepted help from her friends and family, especially her former in-laws and her sister.

Through surviving breast cancer, Chen found a desire to contribute to beating the disease, a renewed appreciation of her family and friends, and a focus on the daily positive little things. Chen walked into the new office location of the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition in Wilmington four and one-half years ago with the desire to volunteer, and currently mentors breast cancer patients and serves as the Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees. She chooses to see the positive side of life’s daily challenges.

Dr. Carabasi is a board certified vascular surgeon who has been in practice for over 20 years at a prominent medical school in Philadelphia. He has been listed as a “Top Doc” in Philadelphia Magazine or as a “Top Doc” for Castle Connelly Medical, consistently since 1994. He is also listed in Castle Connelly’s “Americas Top Doctors”. He is committed to providing the highest quality care for your vein problems.
After graduating Summa Cum Laude from Villanova University, Dr. Carabasi completed his general surgery internship at Jefferson Medical College, and Columbia University College of Physicians And Surgeons, Presbyterian Hospital in New York. Following his general surgery residency at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, he went on to study at Pennsylvania Hospital and completed his Vascular Fellowship program. He then went into academic practice, where he has been until recently, when he opened the private practice of “Advanced Vein & Vascular Center, Inc”, to concentrate on his vein practice.
A unique technique for the treatment of spider veins has recently been FDA approved and introduced to the United States after 8 successful years of use by over 1,000 physicians in Europe. It is now available in our area as well!
Being a perfectionist, and one who wants to offer the very best to his patients, Anthony Carabasi, M.D. has used virtually every treatment option available for the removal of spider veins. Some techniques such as sclerotherapy have proven the test of time as a good option. Others such as lasers, while often successful, are painful and can cause pigmenting, skin burns, and scarring, and require time out of the sun. The search for the best way to treat these bothersome and often very unsightly veins has been a quest throughout Dr. Carabasi’ career. As one of the most renowned vein surgeons in the Delaware Valley and now, with the addition of this latest tool, Veinwave, using thermo-coagulation, he feels he now has an adequate arsenal of choices to treat all aspects of spider veins, whether on the face, legs, or body trunk. No bandages or cover-ups are required, and the patient can resume everyday activity immediately after treatment.
Formerly the Chief of Vascular Surgery at Jefferson University Hospital, Dr. Carabasi left Jefferson in June of 2007, and with partner and former vein technologies clinical trainer Martha Stephens, opened a dedicated vein center on the main line in Wayne. Although knowing there is always considerable risk in introducing a new technology, they thoroughly researched this addition, even treating their own and the staff’s own legs and faces. They became convinced it is a winner! Veinwave was added to the practice in the autumn of 2009. As the first (and still only) practice in Southeastern Pennsylvania to offer this revolutionary new technology, the response has been overwhelming. Within the first few months over 100 patients were treated with Veinwave, most with excellent results.
It is estimated that 25 to 30 percent of women and 10 to 20 percent of men suffer from spider veins or “telangectasias”: those clusters of red, blue, and purple veins on the legs. The numbers are even higher for veins on the face and around the nose – especially in the senior population. Dr. Carabasi added, “Until now, we really have haven’t had anything that I was happy with for treating facial veins – but with Veinwave those unsightly nose veins truly disappear as you watch!”
“Every new technology has a learning curve” says Dr. Carabasi. “We are excited to be among the early adopters in the United States and to now have a really good feel for the applications and limitations of Veinwave. Just like sclerotherapy, Veinwave is still a “process”, and particularly on the legs may require more than one treatment.” These treatments will be 3-4 weeks apart to avoid over-treatment. He has not replaced sclerotherapy, but uses the two techniques, Veinwave for the finer veins and sclerotherapy for the larger spiders and clusters. Together they work in a very complimentary manner. “A treatment plan will revolve around what the patient needs, and is tailored to them”.
“On the face we find one 15 to 20 minute treatment usually does the trick for eliminating unwanted veins. However, unlike laser, which our patients often say “hurts like heck”, our patients experience very little discomfort and are able to go out in the sun after treatment. It can be used on any complexion and skin color. And unlike sclerotherapy, patients are not required to wear compression and avoid direct sunlight. This allows us to do treatments right through the summer months” says Dr. Carabasi.
Especially gratifying is being able to effectively treat the early stages of Rosacea. Seen as a “blushing” effect, Rosacea is caused by the dilation of tiny blood vessels just under the skin that can appear at any age, but often manifests during menopause. It is exciting to have a new technology that will address this comfortably.

“I am really pleased with this new addition to our practice. My patients don’t have to apply make-up or wear compression, and all without the kind of pain many have had in the past. It does a great job,” added Dr. Carabasi. Thanks to this new technology, it looks like there will not be a vein too large or too small to treat at the Advanced Vein & Vascular Center, Inc.”

Lori Zytkowicz is living her dreams as the Owner/Innkeeper of Faunbrook B&B in West Chester, PA, and a PA licensed Auctioneer with Briggs Auction, Inc. of Garnet Valley, PA.
The B&B started with a passion, and became a reality in March 2008. Having spent nearly 20 years in the publishing and education fields, Lori followed her dream and now spends countless hours entertaining guests, preparing gourmet breakfasts and hosting weddings, meetings and many other life celebrations.
“I always wanted a B&B,” Zytkowicz says. Zytkowicz believes that things always happen for a reason. “A good friend of mine was married here years ago and stayed for an anniversary. We wanted to buy, the owners wanted to sell, and if it wasn’t for sharing my dream along the way, we never would have known that purchasing the property was an option. I am in love with the house!”
Faunbrook is an 1860’s Victorian mansion with a prominent West Chester history. Owned by the Darlington family for nearly 100 years, the house stands with much of its original architecture and splendor. With seven warmly decorated guest rooms, five fireplaces and two acres of gardens and fountains, Faunbrook is the ideal setting for local getaways and special occasions for 2 to 85 guests.
As for the auction business, it is in her blood, as her father has been an auctioneer for nearly thirty years. Lori worked with her dad and a family friend in the auction business starting at a young age, and obtained her PA auctioneer’s license in 2007, starting the Real Estate division of Briggs Auction, Inc. in January of 2008.

Royal Photography’s owner, Roy McDowell, brings a wealth of experience, both creative and business, along with an unmatched ability to put people at ease, to every occasion he photographs. Over the past 18 years, Roy McDowell has captured “that” moment for more than 300 brides and grooms and preserved high school memories too numerous to count. Such exposure has led Roy to become one of the most recognizable photographers in Delaware. He creates a lasting impression, not only of an event, but of himself. The pride, precision, and passion he exudes has compelled brides-to-be to track down, “the photographer who took their senior portrait years before”.
Roy exhibits this same commitment and customer service when working with the many schools and businesses with whom he’s managed contracts. “The consumer drives the product I provide; not the other way around”. With the help and support of family, friends, and business associates, Roy McDowell strives to achieve his goal of providing an unforgettable experience with superior photographs, exceptional customer focus, and lasting relationships.
