to try the spectacular range of specialties at Saketumi in Rehoboth Beach,

off of Route 1. Saketumi, the sister restaurant of Jasmine in Wilmington, is the lower shore’s most chic restaurant.

Saketumi offers well-prepared, modern Asian cuisine;
Japanese, Chinese, Thai, and Korean.

As a soup lover, I am always impressed with the spice and freshness of Saketumi’s soups. The Thai Spicy Lemongrass Soup with Shrimp is my favorite. With bell peppers, shitake mushrooms, fine lemongrass and lime, it is a combination of flavors that will thrill your taste buds.

One of my newfound favorites at Saketumi, as well as Jasmine,
is their wonderfully priced Bento Box Specials.

A complete meal that is sure to leave you with plenty of delightful leftovers, these are offered in Thai, Chinese, Korean, or Japanese. The Thai, for instance, starts with Thai soup, followed by a complete divided tray of papaya salad, jasmine rice, spring roll, and Tom Yum Goong. What a delicious selection at a price that will keep you coming back to try all of the varieties.

If you prefer to stick with an entrée, the succulent Braised Korean Shortribs with Kimchee offer a combination of spicy and sweet that play wonderfully off of each other. Another favorite, the Rainbow Roll, has a gorgeous presentation, as does all of Saketumi & Jasmine’s sushi. The fresh tuna, salmon, and avocado topped with roe, will make you remember why you crave sushi.

Saketumi offers a fantastic Happy Hour that includes
drink specials from wine, to cocktails, to beer.

The Happy Hour special not only includes a large selection of sushi and vegetable rolls, but also tempting appetizers such as Crispy Crab Wonton. The best part is that everything is priced starting at $1.75 to $5.00 and is offered seven days a week from 4-6 pm. Now that is something you can’t afford to pass up in this economy.

An exciting edition to Saketumi that’s sure to be a hit
this spring and summer
is the new upstairs Ai Lounge and outdoor area.

What better way to enjoy their fantastic martinis such as the Flirtini, complete with raspberry puree and a splash of champagne than on their hip upstairs patio?
So be sure not to miss out on all of these wonderful offerings in the south. Make it a point to experience Saketumi on your next beach trip, because they are so much more than great sushi.

DE, Chester County, PA & South Jersey

It’s a hectic month, but for most of us it is the most wonderful time of the year. The month of December is sprinkled with good cheer and plentiful parties. There is a spirit of humanity that comes back to life every holiday season.

If you are planning on hosting a holiday party for personal or business reasons, you’ll give careful attention to centerpieces and food, I’m sure. Have you considered the fact that the food can actually serve as the centerpiece? Well, it can when it is a bouquet of FruitFlowers™.

This local company makes delicious, not to mention beautiful arrangements… and they are edible! The sumptuous fruit bouquets arranged to look like flowers can include freshly cut pineapple, strawberries, cantaloupe, honeydew, kiwi, and grapes. All of the fruit is preservative free, ripe, sweet and juicy!

FruitFlowers are wonderful for holiday parties. They certainly give your guests something to talk about and something to nibble on. You can always chocolatize any of the fruit bouquets to add the final touch.

The added beauty of these edible floral creations is that it cuts your party preparation time in half. And we could all use a little more time in the month of December. So this holiday season, consider the fantastic food from FruitFlowers. They also make for great hostess gifts if you’ve been invited to a party.

It can be very stressful finding something unique that you feel confident will be used and loved by the recipient. FruitFlowers is here to help! If you have not seen a bouquet in person yet, go to fruitflowers.com and check them out. They are wonderful! The highest quality fruits and vegetables are used to create these unique arrangements, so they are incredibly tasty all year round.

“Many of our sales come from businesses thanking other businesses. Both men and women love to receive the sweet, juicy flowers, and the novelty of the gift really impresses the recipient, along with how delicious they taste”, says Lorie Marrella, Owner of two FruitFlowers locations, FruitFlowers of Delaware and FruitFlowers of Chester County, PA.

So, whether it is for personal or professional gift giving or entertaining, FruitFlowers is here to make your holiday less stressful and more manageable!

December is jam packed for holiday entertaining. It is filled with joy and laughter. It is the closing of one year and introduction to another year. It is winter, and, we all know how difficult our lives can be during the snowy season. Winter can pack a punch and take a toll on human frailty. It can be a time of sadness and loss. Death and funerals are a difficult, yet an unavoidable part of life. Acknowledging your friends or relatives who are experiencing a loss is important. It is a meaningful moment in their life when you have food or flowers delivered to express your sympathy and concern during this time.

Unique for such occasions, and unbelievably appropriate, is a lovely arrangement of FruitFlowers. The bouquets are in very good taste for families in mourning. The family is every bit as appreciative of the fruit bouquet as they would be in receiving the standard funeral flowers, but they get a taste tempting and unique treat as well.

Another advantage to sending FruitFlowers is that it serves as a conversation piece. There can be awkward moments of silence and this day-brightening fruit bouquet can give them a moment of lightness at a very dark time.

“Receiving a bouquet of beautiful, FruitFlowers was a bright spot during a very sad time for me”, says a customer of FruitFlowers of Delaware. “I had just lost my mother and it was a wonderful pick-me-up. Besides, I had dozens of regular flowers already delivered to me that filled our house. Another bouquet of regular flowers would have been a waste.”

Funerals are difficult, but you can lift someone’s spirits with this mouthwatering creation. Of course what’s most important is letting the person know that you care about their loss, regardless of what you send them.

FruitFlowers is a great gift for happy and joyous times in our lives as well as for sad and difficult times. FruitFlowers is great for any occasion, or no occasion at all!

If you would like to place an order to be delivered in Chester County, PA, Southern NJ or Delaware, receive a brochure or get more of the juicy details, please
call 302-636-0300 or visit FruitFlowers™ online and check out the entire product line at www.fruitflowers.com. Twenty-four hour advance notice is requested to place an order for fruit bouquets and 72-hour advance notice is needed for a vegetable bouquet.

FoodEase is family owned and operated by
Cathy Hagan and Camie Bailey, former owners of
Super Suppers Wilmington.

After five years operating as franchisees with Super Suppers, we discovered our customers would prefer us to assemble their meals instead of the original Super Suppers model of, “make your own.” With that said, we are excited to announce our official changeover to FoodEase

How did we get our new name?

It’s a play on the word “foodies”. If you haven’t heard the term “Foodie” it means “people who simply love food for consumption, study, preparation, and facts about food.” That’s us … and you get the benefit by the ease of delicious ready-to-cook food! And there you have it, our new name … FoodEase – Take and Bake!!

We now have a new user-friendly web site for ordering or viewing our menu and freedom to offer a variety of new recipes! Our “take-out or eat-in” lunch menu featuring hot and cold sandwiches, soups and fresh made salads is continuing to grow and because you asked for it, we now have Wi-Fi and coffee in our cafe area.

At FoodEase, we want to help families,
couples and singles simplify one area of their lives – DINNER

We take care of the hassle that comes with shopping for and preparing your family meals.

Using only the freshest ingredients makes our chef-designed entrees healthy and delectable and contains zero trans fats. We know that everyone wants a meal “just like mom would make.” That’s why our delicious, home-cooked meals are family favorites. Now, you can spend more time with the ones you love and still put a wonderful, nutritious meal on the table.

Experts say that taking time to enjoy meals together helps families reconnect.

FoodEase makes it easier for families to sit down at the table together for dinner. All the shopping, chopping, mixing and prepping is done. All you do is cook it and enjoy your time with the family.

We even have you covered for the holidays! Choose from a wide variety of appetizers, desserts and brunch entrees to complete holiday dinners for twelve.

Sound expensive? Not compared to dining out or your weekly grocery bill. It is hard to imagine that having restaurant quality meals in your freezer can cost less than you would spend at the grocery store to buy the ingredients. But it’s true! At a time of fuel, utility and overall cost of food and living skyrocketing, FoodEase is a luxury that actually saves you money!

Our food is all made and prepared on site here in our store.

Some of the customer favorites include, Asian Flank Steak (awesome on the grill), Parmesan Chicken with Wine & Sage Sauce, Chicken Pot Pie, Crispy Apricot Pork Chops, Sunday Pork Pot Roast, Bruschetta Chicken, Heavenly Chicken, Meaty Cheesy Lasagna, Vegetarian Lasagna, Chicken & White Bean Chili, Eggplant Parmesan, Pecan Crusted Tilapia, Classic Shepherd’s Pie and Breaded Pork Chops w/Cinnamon Apples. Also available are Wheat/Gluten FREE entrees and sides. Ten to twelve new entrees are switched each month. Entrees come in three convenient sizes. Single servings, regular (3 servings) and large (6 servings)

FoodEase is not just for dinner.

Besides more than 35 different entrees to choose from daily we are stocked with many breakfast items, like Cinnamon Monkey Bread and Blueberry Cream Cheese French Toast Bake, or Strata Florentine. Some appetizer choices are Crab & Artichoke Dip, Buffalo Chicken Dip, Jalapeño Popper Dip, and Cranberry BBQ Meatballs. A selection of desserts include; Chocolate Peanut Butter Bars, Key Lime Pie, Berry Apple and Caramel Apple Crisp, Peanut Butter Cup Pie, and Country Peach Cobbler. Veggies and side dishes include Parmesan Garlic Green Beans, Asparagus w/Dill Sauce, Orzo with Grilled Vegetables, Southern Baked Mac & Cheese and lots more! And it’s all made fresh at the store!

Lunch! Bring a friend, sit and enjoy our home-made soup,
fresh to order salads or a delicious sandwich from our NEW lunch menu.

Choose from a Pretzel Grill, Turkey Reuben, Hot Roast Beef, Mozzarella Meltdown, Turkey BLT and more or choose to build your own sandwich with your choice of turkey, ham, chicken salad or tuna salad. No lunch meat used here! We cook our turkey breast, ham and roast beef in the store and cut it fresh daily for your sandwich. Our delicious chicken salad is made from all white meat chicken and our tuna salad is from white albacore tuna.

When you bring FoodEase to the table,
you know you’ll be serving a meal that not only tastes delicious but is good for your family.

Another year down, another new year approaches…many of us make the same New Year Resolution over and over again:to lose weight.

But for some reason it doesn’t seem to stick, and some of us will blame it on our “metabolism”. But what is metabolism and why does it seem to help certain individuals and hinder others? First, we need to define what metabolism is, and then learn what affects it in order to truly understand how it may determine our weight.

Metabolism, defined: Metabolism is the process by which the body changes nutrients we eat into energy that are in turn used by the body to maintain it. It is essential to survival: our metabolism helps the body repair tissue, heal itself from injury, fight disease, and eliminate toxins and metabolic by-products.

Our metabolism is affected by the following factors: Nutrition, Hydration, Physical activity, Body type, Gender, Age, Genetics, Bone structure, Body composition, and Hypothyroidism. Some of these things we can’t control, like Age – our metabolism slows about five percent for each decade after 40. That’s because as we get older, we tend to lose muscle and gain body fat; lean muscle mass is more metabolically active than fat tissue. Gender also makes a difference – men generally have faster metabolisms than women because they’re larger and have less body fat. A man’s basal metabolic rate is estimated to be 10 to 15 percent higher than a woman’s. Hypothyroidism can also be a hindrance – an underactive thyroid will slow down your metabolism and ultimately lead to weight gain. The good news is that a simple blood test can determine whether you have this condition or not. If you do, you can control it with the proper medication (talk to your doc). Genetics play an extremely critical role: some people are lucky enough to be born with speedy metabolisms, and others are not.

But these factors don’t grant us a “gimme” to give up and say “The odds are stacked against me, there is nothing I can do to change my metabolism”. There are factors that affect metabolism that we CAN control, like the amount of physical activity we participate in each week, what we eat and drink each day, how much sleep we get each night, and if we take time to relax and de-stress. Here are my tips to help you master your metabolism – all are research-backed and tried and true – no pills, shakes, sprinkles or other concoctions required!

Bring on breakfast – it is a must every day. Breakfast jump starts your metabolism, and helps your burn calories consistently all day long. Ladies, shoot for around 300-400 calories, gentlemen, around 500-600.

Skip the sugar – Reduce the amount of refined sugar-containing foods; they’ll spike your blood sugar giving you immediate energy but then cause you to crash and want even more sweet, initiating a vicious cycle. Limit jellies, candies, cookies, pies, cakes, muffins…you get the picture!

Spice it up – the compound capsaicin that burns our mouths and causes us to sweat when we eat that enchilada raises your base metabolic level, has an inhibitory effect on the forming of fat cells, and also acts as an appetite suppressant. Research has shown that people eat up to 15 percent fewer calories after eating spicy foods when compared to people who ate foods that did not contain capsaicin. Try hot peppers, cayenne pepper, roasted red pepper flakes, and curries.

Snack smart – no more than 200 calories per snack, and be sure they contain lots of weight whittling fiber. Try fruit and cheese, whole grain crackers and peanut butter, hummus and raw veggies.

Pump up the protein – eating protein gives your body a bigger metabolic boost overall than eating carbohydrates or fats. Plus, eating enough protein will ensure you’ll maintain and build muscle mass (Remember, the more muscle mass you have, the greater your metabolic rate). Make sure to incorporate lean protein (like eggs, skinless chicken, fish, beans and nuts) into most every meal.

Feast on Fish – Omega-3 fatty acids found in fatty fish like salmon, trout, mackerel and fresh tuna help you lower the leptin levels in your blood. Leptin is a hormone that is directly linked to your metabolism. Scientists have found that lower levels of leptin lead to a higher metabolic rate and a decreased appetite.

Dive into dairy- Research shows that low-fat yogurt, skim milk, and reduced-fat cheese raise your body’s metabolism. Get your three eight ounce servings a day.

Get you some grapefruit – Grapefruit contains hydroxycitric acid, which inhibits production of cholesterol and fat that is produced from leftover glycogen (stored glucose in our muscles and liver). Try eating a whole fruit every day.

Kick it with kelp – This green from the sea has metabolic precursors of the active hormones of the thyroid gland, as well as naturally occurring iodine, which together are believed to increase our basal metabolic rate and help with fat metabolism. Just be sure you keep your intake to 1,000mcg of iodine/kelp per day.

Don’t forget to exercise most days (moderate to vigorous activity is encouraged for 45-60 minutes per session), strength train at least two-three times per week (more lean muscle mass means more fat-burning potential), reduce your amount of stress (mediate, try yoga, play with the kids), and get enough sleep (seven to eight hours is the new minimum). I also encourage my clients drink plenty of water (six to eight 8-ounce glasses daily, more if exercising), as well as try decaf green tea (three cups per day has a thermogenic, i.e. fat-burning effect).

You have likely heard the phrase “You are What You Eat,” but what does it really mean?

Anytime we eat or drink, our body works to digest and absorb the nutrients of our food, ultimately with the intention of providing us with the essential ingredients for energy, vitality, and good health.

Unfortunately, many of the choices available to us today do not promote good health. Much of the foods found in grocery stores are filled with additives, preservatives, toxins, and chemicals in order to provide a longer shelf life (for the food, not us). However, whole natural, life-giving foods will provide us with the nourishment we need to sustain long-term good health.

What are whole, natural, life-giving foods?

These are foods that are edible in their original state. They can be eaten with minimal or no preparation and usually can be eaten raw.

So what might be a long-term sustainable way to ensure the foods you are eating, are providing the nutrients you need to be healthy? Taking an “80/20” approach to food can provide a good health sustaining balance without feeling as if you are depriving yourself of the food you love. The 80/20 approach means eating whole, natural, life-giving foods 80% of the time, allowing for the occasional indulgence.

Whole, natural foods include vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts/seeds, and water. They are not only nutrient dense, but also support the body in cleansing and detoxifying, as well as being naturally anti-inflammatory.

‘Eating a rainbow’ of vegetables and fruits every day, at every meal, with an emphasis on dark leafy greens, your diet will be filled with an abundance of vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, fiber, and variety to keep you healthy and feeling good. Fruits and vegetables are one of the most critical foods for maintaining good health. Grains are also an important element of a healthy diet. All grains when harvested are whole grains, meaning they have all of their original parts (germ, bran and endosperm). Most packaged foods are often processed, stripped of their full nutritional benefits and are no longer a whole grain. Some of the most common and readily available whole grains that are brown rice, millet, amaranth, barley, quinoa, oats, spelt, wheat, and rye. These foods are some of the best sources of fiber and do not cause a blood sugar spike or drop like many processed and refined carbohydrates.

Nuts and seeds along with whole natural, healthy food choices, are packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber, healthy fat and provide some of the best plant sources of protein. There are many varieties to choose from including: almonds, walnuts, coconut, cashews, pistachios, pine nuts, and brazil nuts. Eating these raw and unsalted ensures you are receiving the greatest benefit.

Drinking water is one of the most critical sources of nourishment our bodies need to fully function. Hydrating with other liquids does not provide the same kind of benefit. By regularly replenishing the water in our body, especially when we first wake up, we are providing one of the most crucial elements for maintaining and restoring good health.

Consistently eating a diet of primarily whole natural foods, will leave you feeling good and being well. If you have a chronic health condition, eating such a diet can help support the body’s natural ability to heal. The ancient words of Hippocrates: “Let medicine be thy food, and food be thy medicine,” still applies today.

Be sure to read next issue’s article from Your Wellness Partner for the primary ingredient to ensure your life of vitality and great health.

With the holiday season upon us, it’s important to keep focused on healthy eating habits despite the multitude of temptations.

Adhering to a healthy diet can be especially tricky at this time of year. Holiday festivities traditionally revolve around food and the pressure to overindulge can be a real issue for those watching the scale. Between holiday parties at the office, gatherings at the houses of friends and family, and even your own kitchen, it isn’t hard to understand why statistically Americans gain 1-10 pounds each year during the holiday months from Thanksgiving through Valentines Day.

To avoid packing on the pounds during this festive time of year, it’s imperative to make wise food choices. That doesn’t mean denying yourself the pleasures of the food around you, but is does mean using discretion when making your food choices.

Portion control is the name of the game. For those “must have” holiday favorites, select smaller portion sizes to limit your caloric intake without feeling deprived. Resist the unconscious urge to taste everything that is set before you. Rather than filling your plate with piles upon piles of food, dish out appetizer-sized servings.

If you are going to a holiday party, do not go on an empty stomach. Instead, eat something light and drink plenty of water before going. The less hungry you are to start, the less likely you are to overeat. In addition, limit your alcohol consumption at such events. Besides being calorie-packed, alcohol can make you lose your inhibitions and eat more than you originally intend to.

Instead of baking your famous holiday cookies for friends and family, make holiday crafts. Homemade candles, holiday ornaments, herbal tea sets, and decorative gift baskets are just as festive minus the temptations to over indulge in your own goodies. When the weather turns cold, the temptation is to keep the chill away by turning to warm and typically carbohydrate-loaded “comfort foods.” Throw on your fuzzy socks, turn on the fire place, and stick with your normal eating routine. Don’t use the chilly weather as an excuse to forgo physical activity, but rather as an opportunity to go ice skating, skiing, or snowboarding. Outdoor power walking is actually invigorating this time of year, as outdoor activities warm you up quickly without the oppressive heat of the summer. This is also a great time to take advantage of the great specials at your local gym. Take a “hot yoga” class or treat yourself to 20 minutes in the steam room or sauna (after your 30 minutes on the elliptical, of course).

Above all else, remember that the holidays are really about family and friends, not food. Keep your focus on the real meaning of this season and enjoy!

It’s a place where members feel special — and so do their friends, families and business acquaintances. You also will find that sense of attentiveness when you visit any of our 175 reciprocal clubs around the world.

Housed in a mansion built of native stone, the Whist is an elegant gathering and dining destination for members, as well as an extraordinary venue for social events, business meetings and conferences.

George Washington’s surgeon general slept here—and lived and worked here, too, as witnessed by his marble autopsy slab, still in the basement. Dr. James Tilton built the landmark in 1802, a home so grand it was once in the running to become the U.S. Capitol.

But the Whist is not a museum. It is a vibrant, growing organization, with activities that include ballroom dancing, crab and lobster feasts, etiquette lessons for children, Wine and Scotch tastings and live music. Best of all, it is a place to make friends, where the staff greets members by name and superior service flows seamlessly.
