What are eyelash extensions?

The extensions themselves are perfectly polished polyester points. They come in a variety of thicknesses, colors and degrees of curl. There are various brands on the market as well as types of lashes. A lash artist can determine the best “lashscape” for your lifestyle and special occasion.

How long do they last?

Your lash extensions, when properly applied, will last as long as your natural lash is attached to you. Some will pop off, but with a good adhesive and technique you’ll be able to enjoy your lashes through your honeymoon. Our natural lashes shed about 3 to 4 lashes a day.  If an extension is attached, it will fall off with your natural lash. So…if you get a set applied and care for them delicately, you will still have lashes left in 3, 4 even 5 weeks. To keep your lashes looking fresh, Lasting Looks recommends refining fills every 2 to 4 weeks.

I was told to ask for Novalash (or Xtreme Lash, or 3D Lash).  Why is that?

Novalash, Xtreme Lash and 3D Lash are brand names. They are also training companies and lash supply companies. While training and supplies from these companies are very good it really comes down to the knowledge, skill and talent of the lash technician.

How long does it take to apply the lashes?

Your appointment time depends on how many lashes you are getting. At Lasting Looks, we like to keep eyelash extensions affordable for all budgets.Therefore, we offer different size sets:  Wink, Demi and Full. A Wink Set is 20 to 25 lashes per eye; about 45 minutes.  A Demi Set is 40 to 60 lashes per eye; about 60 to 75 minutes. A Full Set is 70 to 100 lashes per eye; 90 to 120 minutes. Set sizes are not universal and can be independently defined by a salon. Be sure to ask about the number of lashes you are getting when you are booking your appointment.

Sounds like an Oxymoron – but Stay with Me

Gone are the days of block foils (highlights), single-tone color, and yellow blondes. This is going to sound like an oxymoron, but trust me it isn’t – It’s About Natural Beauty.  Color customized not only to skin tone, texture and eye color – but also to reflect a women’s individuality and personality. She wants to stand out of the crowd without being a spectacle.

Think Marilyn Monroe – the signature platinum blonde wasn’t natural to her genetically, but was naturally a complement to her persona as Marilyn, the starlet. Show stopping blonde doesn’t come from a store bought box color. Box color can’t fulfill everyone’s ambition or desire. It’s just not that simple.

Cold Hard Facts about Box Color

> You CAN GET chemical burns from box color.

> Box color contains Metallics.

* Metallics make the dye less predictable.

* They are sometimes impossible to color over.

* Metallic dyes can fade to odd colors.

* Metallic salts can essentially melt your hair – can end in disaster, with hair going gray, green, blue, purple, orange, bright yellow and more.

> Box colors fade faster.

> If you want to experiment with other colors later on, it can get ugly.  Without knowledge of color theory, you will most likely get undesirable results like orange when trying to go blonde or black when trying to go brown.

Box Color Alone Doesn’t Damage Your Hair – You Do

Over the counter color is normally a liquid formulation, which requires a large color molecule. In order to penetrate the hair shaft and get through all the 7 to 12 cuticle layers- the hair shaft must be opened wide enough to admit the color molecule into the interior of the hair.

This is accomplished by using more ammonia to open the cuticle layer wide enough to accept the large molecule, and this is where over the counter color can cause damage.

It’s rarely the application to virgin hair that causes problems; it’s when you reapply the color each month to cover your gray or every 6 weeks or so to refresh the pigments. Each time the refresher is applied to each and every strand. This equates to putting ammonia over ammonia each and every time!

Ammonia damages hair by leaving it rough in texture, which causes the color to fade quickly and lacking in shine.

Salon color has much smaller molecules, uses less ammonia, has 100% oxidative dyes with no direct dyes and works off a 20 volume peroxide system. All of which is healthier for the hair.

A professional stylist knows when to use one product for re-growth and when to use another on the remaining previously colored hair to add shine and deposit pigment. They have the ability to refresh the hair with a demi-permanent that doesn’t contain ammonia, so the hair shaft only gets one application of an ammoniated product.

While box color brands do offer different gadgets for highlights and lowlights, these tend to look flat because it takes some skill to know where and when to place color modifications to enhance your natural beauty. It’s worth mentioning here that when it comes to repeating this process at home, it can be very tricky.

Truer Colors

Professional stylists are knowledgeable in color theory and pick pigments for the desired shade.  They mix the perfect formula with different volume levels available in their secret stashes of high-end color. They add boosters to enhance pigments, to make a fire engine red more fiery for instance. And they have neutralizing pigments to help tone down color, often creating a shade with three or more different colors.

In the end It’s About the Money

Color correction is expensive in both time and money. The damage of box color will need to be grown out, which will take years and time is money.

In the end, it’s not so much that box color is bad as it is that it takes a talented professional to apply it evenly, select the right corrective shades and repeat the process as many times as you love your new look.

Do you know your best colors? Sure you do!
When someone says, “You look great!” or “That blue dress really brings out your eyes!”, you are probably wearing your colors. When you are glowing your complexion comes to life. Do you know how to “color you beautiful” all the time, or are you hit and miss? Which season are you? Are you warm or cool?

Skin tone is the primary factor in determining whether you are warm or cool and which season you represent.  You can be fair, peach, pink, olive, brown or golden beige. Look at the inside of your wrist to help narrow it down.

Eye color is another factor. Eyes can be blue, hazel, green, or brown. Look close and see if you can see a gold circle around the pupil or a white circle around the pupil before it blends into the iris. Gold around the pupil makes you a warm season and the white makes you a cool season.

Hair color is the last thing you consider. (Not because we have a little help sometimes!) There are many shades of red, from strawberry blonde to copper and auburn. Black hair, blondes and brunettes have just as many hues and shade variations as do redheads. Hair color varies in intensity so that can be a little trickier to determine.

Skin tones, eye and hair color have now put you into a warm or cool category. Your seasonal cool colors are winter and summer while your warm colors are spring and autumn.

Antique Jewelry

Antique jewelry or the term antique is used to mean different things. The most accepted definition is any object that is over 100 years old in age. Of late, some use the term to mean anything over 75 years old.

Vintage Jewelry

Vintage is a term applied to objects or jewelry of some age. Usually people think of vintage in relation to items with an age of at least 25 years old, but again this is not consistent – it can vary from person to person or dealer to dealer. Vintage jewelry is frequently applied to jewelry from, say the 1950s, 1960s or 1970s.

Estate Jewelry

Estate essentially means that the Jewelry has been previously owned. However, Estate when used in conjunction with jewelry or objects can be a broad term. It traditionally has meant anything of value coming from an estate, family or person that has been owned and is now sold again. This could mean that someone purchased a ring last year, decided to sell it, and the term “estate” might be applied to it. It could also refer to an elderly woman who opts to sell her great-grandmother’s jewelry, and thus this jewelry might be of an age to be considered antique.

I continually strive to remove the mystery from bridal gown shopping.

Again, honesty is key to a positive relationship and the foundation that we build on with our clients. I always want our customers to have a pleasurable experience, feel comfortable and ultimately find the gown of their dreams. The unfortunate reality is that there is a lot out there and it can be beyond confusing.  There are several bridal magazines available with gorgeous, leggy models flashing their pearly whites and looking fantastic. Naturally, a lot of our clients bring in clippings of gowns from magazines. They lay them out and casually say, “I’m not really sure how they would look on me.” Truthfully, magazines can be deceiving and so it is very important to try on as many different styles as possible. The one you LOVE in a magazine may not seem so great once you see yourself in it and vice versa. That is where the honesty of your mother or a trusted friend is needed.

There are basically four body types/shapes:

pear, rectangle, triangle and hourglass. When you start taking a closer look, you will find that most women are pear shaped and A-line gowns are the most flattering (most super models are triangle shaped). To determine your body shape, look straight ahead in the mirror and draw an imaginary line from the widest part of your shoulders to the widest part of your hips. Is it a straight line or are your hips wider than your shoulders or vice versa? Then look at your waist. How far from your imaginary line is the narrowest point of your waist? It is obvious that within these 4 categories there is massive variation. You could be thin or a bit heavier pear shape, a small framed or large framed rectangle or a very tall or very petite hourglass and so on.

Pear Shaped: This is the most common shape. Hips are usually wider than shoulders and the waist is well defined. Strapless, sweetheart necklines, and A-line and modified A-line skirts work well. Ruching or draping is good here. Waist embellishment is also a plus like a sash or a belt. Try to avoid bias or straight cut styles with no waist and mermaids are really tough for pear shapes.

Triangle Shaped: Really an inverted triangle where the shoulders are wider than the hips. Bias or straight cut styles can look very sophisticated and full ball gowns look great on these girls. Ruching or draping is good here. Stay away from a low neckline that can make you seem long and all top from the neck to the bust.

Rectangle Shaped: Here the hips and shoulders are about the same width and there is not much waist definition. Empire styles work especially well here as do bias cuts if you are particularly tall. Ruching or draping is good here Avoid halter or high necks that make shoulders seem narrow and as a result don’t flatter the waist. Straight cut dresses can make you look boxy and should be avoided.

Hourglass Shaped: Think Marilyn Monroe! Strapless, V-neck and low cut styles work well. Modifies A-line and A-line skirts work well as do mermaid styles. Ruching or draping is good here. Avoid bias or straight cut gowns that don’t do anything for an hourglass shape and empire styles will hide your best features.
