Where Did You Get That?! Unique Handmade Wearable Art That Everyone Is Talking About!
Come in to Gertie Birdie Jems & Joolz at Booths Corner Farmers Market or visit us on the Web and find out what all the fuss is about.
What makes this jewelry different? …the artist of course! Ilene Goldman, Ph.D., started her career in Computing Technology helping to create and design advanced technologies for the Navy’s Missile Systems program. Her creative and unique talent of combining technology and art has proven successful in her pursuit to make sure her customers don’t see themselves “coming and going.”
Murano Glass …From Roman Bathhouses To Booths Corner Farmers Market And The World!
A self-taught lampworker, Ilene creates beautiful glass jewelry over a gas-fueled torch. She combines rich colors of glass and metal to create amazing beads, pendants and rings. All the glass created spends approximately 9 hours in a kiln slowly cooling to room temperature. This process stabilizes the glass and keeps it from cracking from the abrupt change in temperature.
Ilene will electroform certain pieces of her glass jewelry in copper. Electroforming is the process of painting a metallic substance on glass then submerging the glass along with copper sheet in a liquid solution while introducing an electrical current to all parts. The copper travels through the solution attaching itself to the metallic paint on the glass. The result is beautiful colorful handmade glass jewelry accented by a deep rich copper embellishment. Adding extra zest to her pieces, Ilene will also combine Murano Glass with sterling silver. Inspired by the Masters in Murano and Venice, this jewelry will truly be a conversation piece in your collection!
Metal Clay – Bronze Is The New Gold!
Metal clay consists of very small particles of recycled metal such as silver, gold, bronze, or copper and then mixed with an organic binder and water. The organic material burns away in a high temperature kiln leaving the metal in its purist form. The designs created in this medium are endless and Ilene takes every opportunity to create one-of-a-kind pieces. She works predominantly in fine silver clay to appeal to her white gold and silver wearing customers as well as bronze clay that attracts her yellow gold-wearing customers. The bronze is polished to a luster that is easily mistaken for 18K gold …until you see the price that is!

Wire jewelry making is one of the oldest techniques in handmade jewelry creation. The wire is bent, looped and tucked thus using no heat or soldering, all hand and wrist manipulated.
Using a variety of wires, which include 14k Gold and Sterling Silver, Ilene turns a gemstone or her own Murano glass into a pendant that is a distinctive piece of art that you can wear!
The most popular items in her wire art showcase are the custom wire names in 14K gold or Sterling Silver. Each piece is masterfully created for her customers right on the spot in Booths Corner Farmers Market. You can also order directly from www.gertiebirdie.com.
She strives to create the most unique and unusual wire wrapped jewelry of the highest quality.
“I’ve had numerous compliments … I haven’t taken it off!” ~ Marilee
