I opened LuLu’s in 2005 after walking away from a successful
13 year corporate career in technology.

At the time the economy was good, women who were outfitted head to toe in designer labels would look at our uniquely stylish, trendy but no name fashion bags and raise their noses. “ I only carry Coach “ one shopper purred at me.

How quickly times have changed, as the economy weakened, jobs were lost and budgets were tightened, LuLu’s quickly became a favorite shopping destination to women who were valuing their dollar, clipping coupons, and only buying things on sale.

We started to use cute words to ease the tension
we were feeling from our financial woes.

Words like Recessionista, Bargainista, Couponista, and then to my delight my loyal customers began calling themselves LuLuistas. Consumers quickly became very educated in when, where  and how to save money. In my circles we stopped talking about Designers and started talking about Deals and suddenly Saving became Chic. We brag about the money we save, not the money we were spending.

I have always been one to mix good quality pieces of clothing with inexpensive accessories. My fashion advice hasn’t changed in over twenty years – Spend money on classic, well made clothing, spend just little bits on trendy accessories that make your outfit stylish.

It delights me to be told by our LuLuistas about how much they look forward to visiting us and that they can spend just a few dollars and walk out with something that makes them feel good, look stylish but not feel guilty about the money they are spending because they know they are getting a great deal.

We are living through a very tough time and women are becoming more resourceful. They are digging a little deeper into their closets, finding pieces that they already own and updating them with accessories. They are learning for just a little bit of money they can take the most basic outfit and transform it into something updated and dramatic while giving it their own designer flair.
