With the holidays approaching, I began to search for the perfect card to send through the mail to a few friends and family members.

I normally just email online greetings but thought it would be nice this year to actually write messages with pretty colored pens, address with holiday stamps and hand to our rural mail lady.  As I begin to see whimsical, peace and love, shimmering cards, I would flip over the box to check the price and be frustrated ~ not at the cost, but at three little words ~ “Made in China.”

The more I searched, the more I found.  I ended up leaving the store with no purchased items but a lot of thoughts in my head ~ Are all the factories in China running on overtime pumping out all the frivolous gifts we will soon be buying Mom, Dad, Cousin Madeline and our many Secret Santas?  Will the guilt of not wanting to forget our sweet, family friend only add to all the worthless trinkets she needs to dust and possibly feed a hoarding habit?  And none of this materialism will truly help our struggling economy or put the unemployed in my town or state back to work.  It may help Wal-Mart hire more people but not really fix the problem of relying on goods from overseas.

Let’s really celebrate the holidays this year by keeping our spending dollars in our community.  I mean, Dunkin Donuts’ coffee is really good but why not give a gift certificate from Café a Go Go on the avenue in my town of Rehoboth Beach.  The local cafe doesn’t have a drivethru but why not take the time to visit my friends Maria and Jesus who run the place and socialize.

Even better, keep your funds local and honor the health of your friends and family by giving them gift certificates to their favorite chiropractor, organic chef or massage therapist.

My business, Mermaid Massage at Kaya Wellness Center on the bottom floor of the Cultured Pearl Building on Rehoboth Avenue, is making it easy to give joyfully to your beloved family, friends and entourage with a click of your mouse or a quick phone call.  Gift certificates are available at www.kayawellnesscenter.com or call 302-227-3450 or 302-448-5206.  Deliveries will be made through the mail or personally, if you’d like.

As most of you know, massage is beneficial for stress relief, decreasing blood pressure, eliminating pain and toxins from the body, balancing emotions. . . and the list goes on and on, but a unique treatment that gives your recipient a tour through all the best bodywork and energy modalities and my most popular service is the 90-minute Mermaid’s Dream Ritual.  This deluxe treatment includes advanced massage, reflexology, cranial sacral therapy and reiki in one session.

Plunge into the depths of your body, mind and soul with this one-of-a-kind, sensual experience.  Advanced massage encompasses Swedish, deep and myofascial release.  Reflexology works with  points on your hands, feet and ears that are directly linked to muscles, joints and organs of the body.  Cranial Sacral Therapy balances the pulse of the cerebrospinal fluid with gentle holds of the head and lower back.  This modality aids pain, headaches, the sinuses, fibromyalgia, anxiety and many other conditions, and the client  feels like they are floating.  And reiki is profound energy healing that relaxes and zeros in on exactly where the client needs it.  The session is individualized for the recipient, taking care of the needs of the day and is only $145.  After this transformational experience, clients can use the private, Vichy shower in the Divine Mermaid Sanctuary, to wash away any last cares or worries, for free, regularly a $30 value.

If you are looking for a gift that will last all year, purchase a Mermaid Yearly Pass which gives your loved-one 12 of these lovely treatments for only $1240, saving $500.  With this package, the client can opt for a 45min massage and 45 min facial some months.  Customizing the session is always my first priority.  These treatments expire within a year’s time and can also be shared among 2 people.

Stay safe this holiday season, enjoy every moment and put your time, money and efforts into your community.  Peace and beauty in the world starts with peace right here in our backyards.  Blessed Be!

Diane Heck, LMT, LE, Reiki Master has been practicing the healing arts for over 15 years.  She’s Wilmington-born but has lived in Sussex County for about 7 years.  When not doing massages, facials, body treatments and energy work, you can find her writing on her lap top, creating rituals, walking the labyrinth, reading tarot and chatting with her facebook friends.  She lives in the middle of a field in Harbeson with her partner Susan and their 3 four-legged children.

Testimonial:

I was referred to Diane by my chiropractor.  I have severe scoliosis, compounded by osteoporosis.  I have chronic neck, back and hip pain.  My goal with Diane is to manage my pain with holistic techniques.  To that end Diane brings an arsenal of massage therapy techniques.  She began with what I expected—a traditional back massage.  There was immediate and prolonged pain relief.  But as we talked about my condition and she began working with my body over time, she targeted other areas in my body that needed healing and stress relief.  I have told Diane that an hour massage with her is like a meditative journey.  As I begin to relax in her special environment, I am able to “let go” and feel the muscles, tendons, bones, even my circulation respond to the massage.  The reflexology work she does with me targets the whole body.  This process brought me significant relief to my hip and my foot is pain-free now.

As with other holistic methods such as chiropractic and yoga, Diane’s massage therapy is curative.  In a very real physical way massage promotes proper alignment of your body (and with my spine being crooked, I can really tell the difference) releases toxins, improves movement, relieves pain and consequently promotes a person’s physical well-being.  And no pills! ~ Marion
