A Fork in the Road: Your Path to Better Health
“The fork is your most powerful tool to change your health
and the planet; food is the most powerful medicine to heal chronic illness.”
Dr. Mark Hyman, one of my mentors and a renowned functional medicine practitioner, proclaims this powerful truth. Everything we put into our bodies has a direct impact on our experience of wellness.
When we eat processed foods, fast food, alternative sweeteners, pre-packaged, and even some restaurant food, we are ingesting chemical additives, artificial colors, hormones, preservatives, and toxins. In addition to exacerbating the symptoms of autoimmune disorders, such foods can also have a negative impact on the wellness of healthy individuals. For example, food waxes (used as a protective coating on some fruits/vegetables)—may trigger allergies and can contain pesticides or fungicides, which have been found to cause cancer.
In some cases, making one simple change in diet
will result in significant improvement in symptoms and facilitate healing.
For example the symptoms of arthritis, asthma and psoriasis have been shown to diminish or disappear when we eliminate dairy from the diet. Changing our diet changes our health.
The occurrence of autoimmune diseases (diseases in which the body’s tissues are attacked by its own immune system — lupus, alopecia, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and many others) has tripled in the last 3 years; 24 million people in the U.S. currently are afflicted with an autoimmune disease (and oftentimes a person may have more than one).
People with these conditions are particularly vulnerable to the effects of unhealthy food choices, because their bodies work harder every day to protect themselves from a perceived attack.
What’s the good news? The human body has the ability to heal itself naturally.
The body naturally heals wounds, as long as we support the healing process. Our internal systems respond similarly, restoring energy, vibrant good health and wellness, when we provide an environment for healing.
What does it take to maintain good health?
What is needed to restore your body when plagued with a chronic condition —
weight management, autoimmune disease, chronic pain, inflammation?
How can we achieve healing?
Real healing and a new experience of health come only with new actions. We can’t keep taking the same action and expect different results.
Having the “know how” alone, unfortunately does not always lead to better health. Support, a structure, and being accountable leads to a higher success rate than doing it alone. As a coach, I not only see “blind spots” that undermine success but provide a personalized approach that can help you reach your goals and achieve a lifetime of good health. Every person’s body is unique and therefore the nutritional, physical and lifestyle needs of each person will be different.
Being well is our birthright, but healing takes time–
after all, it took time for the sickness or imbalance to emerge. Thankfully, it is never too late to move in the direction of good health and wellness. We truly are what we eat. Eating foods in their natural state gives us a state of health that is pure, natural and filled with energy and vitality.
What would that experience be like for you? Now is the time to find out.
