Independent research done by Caliper, a Princeton based management consulting firm, and McKinsey & Company, a management consulting firm advising leading companies on issues of strategy, organization, technology, and operations indicated that women have physical, emotional and organizational strengths that motivate their employees and colleagues to excel in the workplace. That is not news to any of us who have been leading organizations to excellence for many years. What is news is our own acknowledgement of those strengths.

Dr. Musimbi Kanyor, Secretary General of the World YWCA, says it best: “There is a new growing appreciation of the traits more often considered to belong to female persons, those traits that women use to keep families together and to organize volunteers to unite and make change in the shared life of communities. These newly admired leadership qualities of shared leadership; nurturance and doing good for others are today not only sought after but also indeed needed to make a difference in the world in which we live today.”

Historically we have downplayed the skills we bring to the workplace. Countless times I have heard women describe themselves as “just a teacher” or “just a manager” or (worst of all!) “just a housewife”. Consider the basic skills necessary to be “just a … ”scheduling, resource allocation, process design, project implementation, assessment, delegation, personnel development, budgeting, need I go on? Appropriate application of these skills requires an appreciation of personal values, conservation of energies, an ability to make decisions, a connection with others for support and personal growth, and authentic living.

I challenge you to acknowledge and celebrate the skills you bring to your workplace, to your home, and to your life. You can make a difference. We can make a difference. You have the keys    to leadership.
Women Hold the Keys to Leadership is an interactive presentation on the inherent skills that women bring to all levels of leadership.  Here you have an opportunity to review your personal values, energies, choices, connections and authenticity and to learn how to apply those skills in your personal and professional life.
