Hypnosis: Changing Your Life One Thought At A Time!
By: Beth J. Keil, Certified Hypnotist RN, BCH, CHBE
In August a woman was found dead in her Las Vegas home after going missing for four months. Why wasn’t she found earlier? She was under a maze of squalor that was impassable even for the search dogs to find her.
Hoarding is gaining visibility in the media. There are now two “reality” programs on TV that highlight the impact hoarding has on the hoarder and the people they live with. Something to keep in mind regarding reality shows is they are filmed and edited to create drama so as to keep viewers watching. I learned this when I was asked by MTV to work with an MTV MADE participant. We the viewers only see a small portion of what happens.
Though you may not realize, hypnosis is very helpful for people who are dealing with clutter, whether what some may call being messy all the way to hoarding. I’ve even had a client say hypnosis was helpful for her to clear the emotional clutter she’d been carrying (check the December/January issue of The Womens Journal to read more about that). I’d like to share with you what a client wrote about the impact the hypnosis work she and I did together has had on her life and on her hoarding:
My life was grossly out of control. I was obese, living in squalor, and suffering from chronic stress and low self-esteem. I was at my wit’s end.
Having had a few stress-relieving hypnosis sessions several years ago and finding them effective, I decided to try again. That’s what brought me to Beth.
Hypnosis didn’t transform my life – no outside source can do that. What it did do, however, is transform ME. I stopped
burying my feelings and started proactively working through them instead of either stuffing them down or letting them take over completely.
Food was both my comfort and my curse, which is why every single diet I’d ever tried eventually failed. Simply changing my eating habits was something else I’d tried half a hundred times before, with even less success than dieting outright. This time, however, the change in my diet stuck and I’ve lost more than 50 pounds and am still losing. Beth also put me in contact with a wonderful professional organizer who helped me get my home together.
I am not going to lie and say that the place is always photo-ready but now, when I see it becoming untidy, I’m able to tackle the mess instead of just looking at it and feeling that there’s nothing I can do. I no longer immediately assume the worst when people don’t behave the way I expect them to; I look to see why they are behaving that way and whether they’re behaving that way toward others (and they almost always are – how did I never notice that before?). I’ve moved to a point where I feel that I’m a worthwhile person who deserves some contentment and happiness. I’ve come to realize that the perception that I’m the world’s punching bag has never existed anywhere but inside my own mind. It’s a long, ongoing process, but thanks to the foundation Beth gave me, I know I can succeed.
Best of all, I no longer feel like I’m just a victim of circumstances. I have the inner strength to take a step back, look at the problem and think “what do I need to do to fix this” instead of flailing around helplessly and becoming depressed… and reaching for the donuts.
I will always be grateful to Beth for giving me the tools I need to get my life back into control.

As you just read, the hypnosis “transformed” my client so that she could be in action to lose the weight she’d been carrying both physically and in her home. Afterwards she was able to effectively use the help of a professional organizer to assist in clearing her home as she needed the help and guidance. 147 bags of garbage, 8 bags of clothing, 2 bags of shoes, appliances/bedding, and papers and magazines from the 1990s were moved out. Found was a checkbook, $209 in change as well as her strength, confidence, and self-esteem!
