The Sentiment Of Jewelry
A wedding is such a sentimental time. So many opportunities to create wonderful memories! Jewelry plays an important role in wedding traditions. From the engagement ring to the wedding bands to special pieces both worn and given on the wedding day, items of jewelry serve to remind us of that special time and the people involved. Here are some ways to add to an already momentous occasion!
First, consider engraving the engagement date inside the engagement ring. Most people don’t even remember the date they got engaged! And yet isn’t it symbolically the first day of an amazing journey? This can be done anytime, but preferably after the ring has been fitted appropriately. It is more common to engrave the wedding bands, usually with the date, but also with initials, nicknames, or sentimental phrases. You may be limited to a certain number of characters or letters by the size of the ring or stones set into it, but there are ways to be creative about it.
As dresses and other wedding clothes are chosen, perhaps there is family jewelry that can be shared and worn on the wedding day. Grandmother’s pearls would add a piece of the family heritage to wedding day photos. Earrings worn by either the mother of the bride or groom on their wedding day would start a lovely tradition for the next generation to follow. Perhaps a bracelet or pendant belonging to a family member can be loaned for the day, taking care of the “something borrowed” category. Family jewelry being worn or given for the occasion should be checked to make sure clasps are secure and gemstones are held securely in place. Pearls should be restrung if the cord shows wear. A little preventative maintenance adds to peace of mind! If there is jewelry that is not in the best condition but has sentimental value, look into restoring it. Technology has come a long way, and many repairs and alterations can be done today that couldn’t easily be done even ten years ago. There is always the question “Is it worth it?” If the piece is sentimental, it can be well worth it!
Jewelry is one of the most popular gifts given during a wedding. Brides and grooms have exchanged jewelry gifts with each other and in later years still wear and enjoy those same pieces. It’s not unusual for the parents of the bride to give her jewelry on her wedding day to commemorate the occasion. Attendants are also lucky recipients of jewelry gifts.
Many times the attendants are given jewelry to wear on the wedding day, earrings or neckwear or a bracelet for the women to compliment their dresses, and cufflinks for the men. Whenever the pieces are worn after the wedding, it will bring back the fun, wonderful memories of the day.
