Automotive Myths And Tall Tales
One of my favorite shows on TV is Mythbusters on Discovery Channel. This show takes common myths and uses science to prove or disprove them. I like it mostly for the super slo-mo cameras and the large explosions. Here are a few automotive myths from the show.
Episode 136 – Car Skipping
The gang proved it is possible to skip a car across the surface of a pond like a stone by driving over the water at 100 miles per hour.
Episode 131 – Car Over a Cliff
Will a car explode when it is driven off a cliff? You bet! A large impact to the gas tank creates a big explosion. Hollywood uses extra explosives.

Episode 128 – Dirty Car = Better Gas Mileage
Dirty cars get worse gas mileage then clean cars. But a dimpled car (like a golf ball) gets better gas mileage due to reduced drag. Does this mean door dings give you better gas mileage?

Episode 125 – Open Convertible vs Rain
The windshield creates an air pocket strong enough to keep an open convertible interior dry during a rain storm while driving 90MPH. Wow!
Episode 115 – Hollywood Crash Test
Can cars drive through large objects unscathed like in the movies? I DON’T THINK SO!
Fruit Stand = crushed car and fruit = BUSTED
Chain Link Gate = crushed but drivable car = POSSIBLE
Camper Trailer = car and camper destroyed = BUSTED
Under Tractor Trailer = Instant convertible = POSSIBLE
