Demystifying Reiki
Google Reiki, and you’ll get some confusing results. Results include pictures of half naked women receiving massage, mystical images of hands and light or Japanese letters with colorful circles. Considering this wide range of interpretations, no wonder I still receive so many questions about the treatment, benefits and practice of Reiki.
While once considered a “new age” therapy, Reiki is now main stream. The National Institutes of Health has demonstrated Reiki’s effectiveness in pain management and is investigating its healing effects on AIDs and cancer patients. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Reiki’s benefits include relief from: anxiety, minor illnesses, chronic pain and side effects of medication. Many of my clients have used Reiki to speed the healing process after surgery and other medical treatments.
Other benefits include relaxation and stress reduction. In fact, Dr. Oz has recommended Reiki as “one of the ultimate health practices to incorporate into your life.” Reiki is also used to help give a sense of peace to dying patients and their families and caregivers. I’ve witnessed this powerful effect first hand as a volunteer Reiki practitioner at Neighborhood Hospice in West Chester.
Typically, a Reiki session lasts from 30 to 90 minutes. Clients lay down on a massage bed and, despite those Google images, are fully clothed the whole time. The practitioner places his or her hands either slightly above or on many of the body’s energy points. The placement of hands allows this energy to balance and flow more productively. This balance speeds the body’s own healing process and leads to a deep state of relaxation. In my practice, I welcome you to bring a friend if it will make the experience more comfortable for you.
Since individuals are unique, responses to Reiki will vary. I’ve had clients tell me they’ve found increased energy after a session. Other clients, who consider themselves high strung and impatient, tell me their Reiki session allowed them to finally find calmness. Though responses differ, I can guarantee that once your body’s energy is brought into alignment with a Reiki treatment, you will feel better.
