Reputable Plumbers Are Licensed And Insured

Brian and Robbie Frederick just renewed all of their company business licenses while completing their 2010 business plan. Before being able to purchase or renew a business license in the State of Delaware, the State requires you to show proof of worker’s compensation and liability insurance. On top of that, it is mandatory to purchase state and multiple county, city and municipality licenses to do business in those areas. Brian and Robbie want homeowners to understand how important it is, when hiring a general contractor, to choose one who uses licensed sub-contractors. Licensed sub-contractors must satisfy criteria required by New Castle County (www.nccdelu.org).

Believe it or not, the tiny state of Delaware has over 1300 licensed plumbers! However, only a small fraction of these plumbers is in business legitimately. Just because a plumber has a plumbing license doesn’t mean that he has a business license to legally do business in Delaware. Homeowners, in order to protect themselves, should verify that their plumber has the following credentials:
• Is properly insured
• Holds a business license from the State of Delaware
• When required, pulls a permit for the work being performed
• Is a member of the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org)
• Is a membership of the Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractors (PHCC) Association, both locally and nationally (www.phcc.org)
• Is actively involved in his community.

Homeowners should also understand that, before an individual tests for a masters plumbing license in the State of Delaware, he must complete 4 years of post secondary education, 8000 hours of on the job training, and an additional 2 years of work in the trade. Most reputable companies continue to educate their plumbers through the company’s manufacturers and trade organizations.
