beauty is a light in the heart.”

My vision of beautiful has evolved over the past 32 years since I first became a licensed cosmetologist. When I began my career, my idea of beauty was somewhat driven by what I learned in school and saw in the media.

Over time, I’ve seen the detrimental effects media can have on the egos of both men and women in America.  Americans spend $20 billion annually on cosmetics; $300 million on cosmetic surgery; $33 billion on dietary products. This illustrates how much time and money we spend on our physical appearance.

j_christian_red_holiday_dec10We’ve let media drive and define our personal idea of beauty.   Want proof?  Just go to your favorite internet search engine and type in “timeless beauty”.  No surprise, your search will return plenty of information on benefits of plastic surgery, botox injections, wigs, and hair extensions.  Flip through any magazine – sexy sells. Notice I didn’t say ‘beauty’ sells.

Sadly this view of beauty is inadequate. Looks change, shallowness is empty, vanity is ugly and insecurity is not beautiful. It makes it difficult to have and be a friend. And you put a lot of expectations on others to compliment you and make you feel good.j_christian_taylor

How do Men Define Beauty?
When surveyed, men say that a beautiful woman boils down to two characteristics: Happy & Healthy. Let’s take a closer look. There is more to this definition of beauty than meets the eye.

Happy – When we are happy, our brain lets off adrenalin, there is light in our eyes, we walk with vigor, and we have hope for living. When we are down, our eyes are naturally downcast, our face tenses up, we slouch and our mind is elsewhere. We tend to wear darker colors too, so as not to bring attention to ourselves. Happy people attract others, while sad people tend to pull people away.

Healthy – Looking healthy means having good skin, being energetic and having no obvious disability or disfigurement. We all know the ways to achieve healthiness to various degrees–Eating right, sleeping well, exercising regularly and learning to appropriately manage stress.

Definition of Beauty – True Beauty
What is beauty? It is not physical appearance. It’s what’s found inside, what’s in your heart. Charity is beautiful. Humility is beautiful. Kindness is beautiful. Confidence is beautiful. Security and self-esteem are beautiful.

One of the great beauties of all time, Sophia Loren said “Beauty is how you feel inside, and it reflects in your eyes. It is not something physical’

My fondest wish for you this holiday season and for the coming year in addition to peace, prosperity and happiness is that you find your uniqueness and your true inner beauty.  Looking forward to the celebration.
