WOW, What A Year!! What Will Next Year Bring Your Business?

As of late, every time I look at a calendar I ask myself where the year has gone. At that point, I start to think about the things that I had wanted to accomplish this year, but just didn’t get around to doing. This is a common feeling at this time of year.  Many of our goals and dreams were somehow pre-empted by everyday life.
As we look at our businesses and the “things that we didn’t get around to doing,” it’s easy to come up with excuses that were out of our control. While this sometimes happens, the real questions we should be asking ourselves are “Was the ‘thing’ important enough to be done?” and “What did we do in its place?”
This year-end review process is critical to planning for the upcoming year. Its purpose is not to justify why something was not completed, but to help determine if it needs to be carried over to the new year. If it needs to be done in the upcoming year, understanding what prevented its completion helps ensure that it will be done.
Strategic Planning is the process of determining the future of the business and which resources will be needed to achieve organizational objectives. Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, many small businesses and non-profits lack a formal strategic plan. Strategic planning helps a business prioritize activities during periods of limited resources and it helps the organization look beyond immediate issues to focus on the desired outcomes. It is a proven way to make decisions, allocate resources, and choose between tactical options, without losing sight of the business’ overall objectives and needs.  Obviously, strategic planning cannot address everything, but it can help create better balance between our longer-term objectives and the more immediate issues that arise throughout the year.
While economic recessions are confusing and painful, they present a great opportunity for business to re-group, re-focus its efforts, and re-invent itself. Many businesses that take this opportunity emerge as stronger, more viable organizations poised to capitalize on the potential growth often associated with economic recovery.
In the rapidly approaching new year, will your business prepare to grow or will it simply hope to survive? While the question of what the new year will bring to your business cannot be answered easily, what you choose to do about it can be answered and acted upon. Business success doesn’t just happen.
It happens as a result of thorough planning, the establishment of sound objectives and solid execution.
Here’s wishing you a
Happy Holiday Season and
a Success-Filled New Year!
