What is Push Marketing?
Letting potential customers/clients know who you are, where you are, and what you have to offer is all part of push marketing. This type of marketing (like TV and large outdoor billboards) was typically reserved for bigger companies with larger budgets. However, new OOH (Out of Home) marketing networks are bringing PUSH marketing to smaller companies because of lower costs. In addition to OOH markets, there is target market promotion marketing. This is trading or bartering your goods and services and combining with another vendor/retailer or service provider to co-promote both of your goods and services. A good example might be an upscale hair salon who wants to promote a new skin care product/service co-promotes with a local upscale restaurant who offers drinks specials and food. Both get to promote their business in a new exciting way.

What is Pull Marketing?
Drawing clients and customers into your store or place of business is the essence of Pull Marketing. This can be done typically with coupons and special offers. There are many pull marketing strategies emerging logo_digital_aug09with local websites offering coupons and specials as well as text message marketing. These are all new “call to action” strategies that will grow significantly because costs are low and offer smaller businesses a valuable tool to “Pull” clients and customers into their places of business. You can also use a direct target marketing strategy. This can involve taking your products/services directly to your target markets. A good example of this is a new small restaurant in need of new clients. Most new restaurateurs believe their food is the best or different but their potential clients do not know that. What to do?—take your food to your markets and let them taste it first hand. Word of mouth will generate all new business using this type
of strategy.

Another good example of this could be as simple as a new children’s hair cut place needs customers and a new family portrait needs new clients. They market free child portrait shots on a special day and share the minimal costs to draw in the new traffic. Both businesses will benefit from this type of co-promotion.

How to do both types of marketing and Why—Even for small businesses!
Here’s how to build both into your business: When you are working on your annual marketing plan, make sure that you are scheduling marketing 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year. But when you do, don’t just stop at one effort: plan to do both push marketing and pull marketing throughout the entire year. Identify your marketing efforts as push marketing or pull marketing. Schedule them into your year at a glance calendar. Then, get out two colored markers and mark your push marketing in one color and your pull marketing in another color. You’ll see that they overlap sometimes and other times where you are only actively doing one. Make sure that 365 days a year you are doing both!

Two types of marketing efforts through the year?
It will be worth it!
