What do you do after your surgeon, oncologist, and radiologist say goodbye?
Survivors of breast cancer, other cancers, lymphedema, and chronic immune disorders benefit from a remarkable movement and exercise program called “HealthySteps.” Benefits include reduction of pain, increased range of motion, flexibility, and energy, released frozen shoulder, improved balance, promotion of a positive self-image, reduction and/or deterrence of lymphedema, weight stabilization, and increased quality of life.
HealthySteps focuses on helping survivors of cancer and chronic illness recover both physically and emotionally. The program combines sound physical therapy practice with the freeing aspects of graceful movement. It incorporates lively music, positive reinforcement from a supportive group, and empowerment from information and education. It is a potent package addressing mind, body, and spirit.
HealthySteps is now offered at more than 600 hospitals and centers in the U.S. and in 15 other countries. Designed by two doctors and a dancer, all exercises are approved by a medical team before adding them to the program. The style of movement is slow and smooth with resistance, and pain is avoided. Chairs are always nearby for seated and balance exercises and rest. No exercises require lying on the floor.
HealthySteps is now available in Delaware. Classes are offered at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Wilmington by a certified HealthySteps instructor.
Joy Mulholland has been a HealthySteps instructor since 2007 and is currently the only certified HealthySteps instructor in Delaware.
Testimonial
“Most of us who attend are seniors with chronic health conditions and/or cancer survivors with a low level of energy and endurance. The benefits we receive from the class are enormous!! Personally, since joining the class, I have experienced more mobility, an increase of energy, a reduction of pain, and a general feeling of well being.”~Lucienne W.
