saiid_pic_am09A popular held misconception is that weight training results in big bulging muscles. In fact, when proper technique is followed, weight training is the most effective way to tone your muscles.

Building muscle mass requires more intensive weight training. Unless your goal is to become a body builder, it is unlikely that you will reach that level of intensity without additional lifestyle/diet interventions and extremely strenuous activity.

Contrary to building muscle mass, building muscle tone can be achieved by higher repetitions with lighter weights: for example, 3 – 4 sets of 8 – 15 reps in each set. It is important to realize that your muscles get used to the level of activity, and can reach a plateau. Therefore, you must routinely either increase the amount of reps or increase weights to train the muscle into responding.

Working with a personal trainer is an excellent way to understand the additional benefits of weight training and to establish an appropriate exercise and nutrition plan in order to reach your goals.
