Planning for Success

Regardless of today’s market conditions, the reason behind many business failures is often only a symptom of a much larger and systemic problem: a lack of strategic planning.
Over the past decade, the economy has steadily expanded allowing easy growth for many businesses. “Why should we spend time and effort on strategic planning, we’re doing great.” was an often heard statement. New businesses either launched without a plan or never updated the one they had and established businesses saw little reason to use their resources reviewing and planning.
Strategic planning encompasses more than what is typically addressed in a business plan and is a critical process for any size business. Strategic planning helps a business prioritize activities during periods of limited resources, and it helps the organization look beyond the immediate issues to focus on the desired outcome. It is a proven way to make decisions, allocate resources and choose between tactical options, without losing sight of the business’ overall objectives and needs.
An important part of strategic planning is the on-going review. As with any goal or objective, there must be some mechanism to measure when it has been achieved. The process of continual measurement and review allows the strategic plan to become more than just a dusty binder in a bookcase. The review process helps determine what course corrections are necessary to achieve the overall objective. It provides snapshots of the business, often referred to as the “dashboard”, to monitor emerging problems allowing time for correction before they become a crisis. As these modifications and corrections are integrated into the strategic plan, the plan effectively becomes a dynamic document providing focus and prioritizing activities against available resources.
Many view weak market conditions or a poor economy as the reason for their lack of success. However, even in the worst economy, businesses in every field continue to grow because they realize that success is not based on the business climate, but on the decisions they make and the objectives they choose to pursue. Business success doesn’t just happen. It happens as a result of thorough planning, the establishment of sound objectives and solid execution.
The businesses that will succeed in the current economic environment will do so because they have planned to succeed. In business “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail”.
