The Right Home for the Right People at the Right Time
By: James Quinn
On July 1st 1947 William Levitt broke ground on the first house in Levittown. After the war most builders built four homes a year. William Levitt intended to finish thirty to forty houses a day. He was the right man for the right time.
What Henry Ford was to the automobile, William Levitt was to the housing market. Each house had two bedrooms, measured 750 square feet and sat on 1/7 of an acre. They had no garage, no basement and an unfinished second floor. The first year the houses sold for $7,900 and the Levitt’s made a profit of $1,000 on each. Levittown was a family operation. William Levitt, the salesman his brother Alfred designed the housed and Abe their father a self appointed suburban philosopher. They all believed they were on a noble crusade and were helping people realize the American Dream. Levittown homes were the first houses with fully outfitted kitchens. It was a radical and expensive idea but a marketing winner because young families buying their first house would have little money left over. By 1968 the Levitt’s had built over 140,000 houses around the world. Today it is impossible to find a Levittown house in its original form. The houses now resell for $150,000 to $250,000.
