Tell your sales person what you expect from your carpet. How much traffic will the area have, do you have pets, kids etc. A knowledgeable sales consultant will be able to answer all of your questions and will be able to help you select the style of carpet that best suits your needs.

Benefits of using a higher end good quality carpet in the first place or as a replacement carpet are as follows: You will not have to replace the carpet as often; the carpet will wear better; and it will look better for much longer.

It is not the thickness of the pad that is important. It is the density of the pad that counts. Up grading your cushion or pad will add years to the life of your carpet. Always up grade pad if your budget allows.

New style carpets which offer “soft back” have a no wrinkle warranty which could save you the inconvenience of having installers come back in 2-3 years to re-stretch your carpet. “SoftBac” – A “Revolution Underfoot” – SoftBac is an exclusive, patent-pending product from Shaw Industries, the industries largest carpet manufacturer. SoftBac is a major improvement on standard woven secondary, and it is clearly a “revolution underfoot.” Carpets backed with SoftBac, which feels like a fleecy texture, offer a 10 Year NO Wrinkle Guarantee, which show’s Shaw’s commitment to their validation of its superior performance in respect to re-stretch problems. All in all….. SoftBac prevents damage to baseboards and door facings. SoftBac is much softer and easier to install in cold weather. SoftBac’s flexibility allows fewer seams. SoftBac is more dimensionally stable and reduces callbacks for wrinkles.

Other key benefits to you, the consumer, include 25% improvement in sound absorption and an 11% reduction in heat loss compared to carpets with conventional backings. In studies, carpets backed with SoftBac were chosen time and time again as offering superior comfort underfoot.

Advantages of Upgraded Carpet

Although you may have to put out more money at the time of your initial purchase of your carpet, in the long run the carpet will last much longer. An upgraded carpet can last up to 20 years if taken care of, where as a low end builder grade carpet will only last 5-7 years. Over the 20 year period, you will actually have spent less money than you would have if you went with a cheaper carpet. Also, your home will only have to be torn apart for the one initial carpet installation in 20 years. Chances are very good that you would have to replace a low end carpet three times in that time period. Going with a better carpet in the beginning will cost you one third of what it would cost you in labor over this time period.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Nylon carpet will wear and out perform polyester and olefin carpets. Nylon will not show wear patterns, nor will it matte down as quickly as other fibers. Keep in mind that texture warranties are important for any type of carpet. What the texture warranty means is that carpet will not exhibit significant loss of texture from foot traffic. Most carpets have a performance rating, keep in mind the higher the rating the better the carpet will withstand foot traffic. Nylon will be your most expensive fiber other than wool carpet. At A Plus we sell both Mohawk and Shaw carpets. Each manufacturer has a good, better, and best carpet.

Horizon has a carpet out now called “Smart Strand”. One hundred percent Mohawk Smart Strand 3 GT Polyester is made with DuPont Sovona Polymer, which has exceptional durability with permanent protection in stain resistance. “Smart Strand” has an enhanced protection which is engineered into the fiber. It will never wear or clean off. It comes in a variety of styles and textures. Berbers, Saxny, friezes, and cut piles.

Frieze carpets are becoming more popular because of there softness and durability. They are also known as California Berbers or shag carpets.

Don’t hesitate when you hear “shag”. You do not have to “rake” this carpet. Technology today is different than it was 50 years ago, so leave your rakes in the garage.

All carpets have advantages and disadvantages. Following is a list of different styles and colors: 1. Saxony Plush – shows foot print, vacuum marks. Some people love Saxony and some don’t; 2. Textured Plus – Minimizes foot and vacuum marks; 3. Sculpture cut & loop carpet is variegated and will hide stains. 4. Friezes-Shag is softer looser fiber and comes in solids or multi-colors. Multi colors will hide stains; 5. Berbers- Some are soft and some are rougher in texture. Most Berbers are trackless. Berbers will wear like iron, but longer loop styles can pull easier if snagged, (Dogs with claws). If carpet is snagged don’t pull carpet just cut it with scissors. Berber comes in a variety of patterns, styles and multi-colors. Berber is a very popular carpet at the Beaches. Also, Berber can be installed wall to wall over pad which will be softer. Keep this in mind if installing in a child’s play room.

Commercial carpets wear great for commercial applications. But if you put pad down with commercial carpets your carpet may wrinkle and buckle with lots of traffic. So it is best to simply glue carpet down without a pad.

If you spend a little more money initially you will save money in the long run.  At A Plus Flooring all installations have a one year guarantee. That means that if you have any installation related problems within the first year of purchasing a carpet from A Plus Flooring we will take care of the problem at no charge to you the customer.

Publisher’s Note:

Over the years I have used A Plus Floor Store, Inc. for all of my carpet jobs. As well as my daughter’s home. One of my jobs was for a hallway and stairs in a six bedroom bed and breakfast in Lewes, DE, after five years of wear and tear that carpet still looked like brand new. So when I sold the B & B and built a new home I went to see A Plus for all my flooring. I can’t say enough good things about them and their service. Thanks Guys, PR
