Baby boomers continue to influence, inspire and even change the landscape of every area of industry they touch. The beauty industry is no exception.

We’re seeing sexy baby boomers on the glossy pages of fashion magazines and headlining award winning films.

Last year at the 1st Annual J.Christian Studio Bridal and Prom Showcase I met a group of friends between the ages of 40 and 60 who were very interested in becoming models for the next year. They were vibrant, full of fun and ready to dispel the notion that youth is where all energy and trendsetting occurs. These ladies had wonderful egos and I will surely use them at the 2009 show!

I meet ladies like these most every day. They’re of the cool, older set. They’re moving away from the youth-obsessed look to the “I’m confident, I’ve earned the right to be sexy, chic set”.

Today’s modern women in her 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and older are casting off the old stereotype of the polyester wearing senior citizens of yore and they’ve also given the boot to the youth-obsessed movement. They’re ready to be themselves, an individual without following trends and they want something very luxurious and personal.

I’ve been often inspired by the woman who evolves her look and fashion sense from year to year rather than stalling in some earlier period. This often detracts from the natural beauty of the woman as the onlooker is more so focused on period clothing, jewelry or hair style.

Women who recreate and evolve their look as they age appear more vibrant and youthful.

As women age, they begin to better understand the impact of skin tone, complexion, hair type and facial structure on hair fashion. When I consult with a woman of this caliber, I’m not designing a look for them with the “older lady” in mind. I’m thinking of their individuality, their artful expression, and their expectations.

As their Artist, I often see the opportunity to share the creative process introducing them to new cutting techniques and trends in hair fashion. This doesn’t mean by default my client is looking for color, though many do. I’m finding the opposite in some cases. Many boomers believe silver is chic, trendy.

I recently read an article that stated that nearly half of women over 40 are no longer coloring their hair.

Whether you should go gray really depends upon some simple rules about skin tone and complexion, eye color, make-up sensibility and of course ability to work with your hair. There is a gorgeous way to go gray if you so chose, but I’d highly recommend a well-educated Artist to take you through that awkward gray hair growing-in stage that occurs when you stop dyeing your hair.

Personally, I am always in favor of dimensional color and tones; they are the most natural and best looking for woman who still dare to be on the cutting edge. Color is fun, vibrant and versatile.

Whether you decide to explore the vast and varying color techniques to cover your gray or you favor your silver locks over color, you’ll find when you turn gray the protective cuticle thins out which can make your hair coarse and prone to breakage.
Consult your Artist about the best products for your hair. The correct hair products will make all the difference. Without them you could find yourself in a daily struggle to maintain your style. Products can help you maximize manageability, maintain softness, beat brassiness, boost shine and decrease dryness.

Women over 40 are redefining the beauty industry. They are hotter than ever, setting trends the beauty industry simply should not ignore and proving women can be beautiful, sexy, and chic at every age.
