Cosmetic Breast Surgery

careymd08Breast size and shape have assumed great social significance in our society over the past two decades. Feeling self confident and good about one’s self is often related to breast contour. It has become part of our focus on “getting into shape”, but often maintaining a healthy diet and exercise isn’t enough.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures performed each year in this country. Enlargement of the breast is safe, effective, and rapid.  One of the most common reasons women seek breast augmentation is that their breasts have decreased in size after pregnancy. The second common reason has to do with lack of breast tissue development. If you are considering cosmetic breast surgery, talk to your plastic surgeon. Discuss your expectations about looking and feeling better.

The proper plan starts with a comprehensive consultation that includes your medical history as well as lifestyle and activities. Most women can discuss specifically what they want to achieve, but it is up to their plastic surgeon to make sure they keep in mind that their desired results are for improvement not perfection. Together the doctor and patient can tailor a method, including implant selection, to achieve the best results.

Patients find it helpful to actually see and feel the different implants and also try the different sizes in a bra. This helps them to visually estimate the size and shape of changes that can be anticipated. There are many different implants available and these are individualized for each patient. Silicone gel implants have recently been approved for general use, but saline implants are still the most popular at this time. Whichever implants women select, they can be assured of an extensive record of safety and effectiveness.

The operation is performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. The procedure takes less than one hour to perform and the stitches are removed in one week. Patients are encouraged to resume normal activities in two weeks and full activity at 4 to 6 weeks. The incisions are short and almost unnoticeable and easily covered with clothing. The procedure reshapes the breast and surrounding areas. It is very rewarding to see the final result, including increased fullness of the upper portion of the breast, increased cleavage, and gentle fullness of the outside of the breast that helps to balance the hips  and waist.

For women with small breasts or undeveloped breast tissue, the goal frequently is to increase the size of the breast in all dimensions. But the visual improvement goes beyond just the breast area. Once again, the balance between the breast, waist, and hips is improved, making clothing fit better and allowing these women to wear clothing styles that they could not in the past. Patients show increased self esteem, self confidence and a positive body image with their increased breast size.

Breast Lift

braugA breast lift may be needed if the breast skin has been overstretched. A breast lift is usually combined with an implant to enlarge and recontour the breast, and add volume to the upper portion. A breast lift alone can be done for women who are pleased with their size and only need to have their breasts reshaped. This procedure literally lifts all the tissue that is too low, for a more pleasing youthful appearance.

It is easy to see why cosmetic breast surgery is such a popular procedure and why women are so pleased with the results. This operation combines safety and fantastic results with minimal discomfort and downtime. Spring is the most popular time to have cosmetic breast surgery with plenty of time to look great for summer!

Testimonial:
“Before I decided to have this procedure, which I had thought about for many years, I did tons of research. Dr. Asher Carey came the most highly recommended. During my first consultation he told me what to expect, the seriousness of what I was doing, and made the recommendation of the size that I should be for my slender frame. Would I do it again? Yes, I would. Would I go to Dr. Carey again? Absolutely. My breasts look natural, and I never had one ounce of trouble, not then, and not now, nine years later.”   ~P.R., Lewes, DE
